i put those quotes there to support your points, and didn''t bother addingthing because those two posts pretty much said it anyway.
if i disagreed, believe me that i would have ranted for a long while
MMORPGS: Story ideas? Christian Elements?
--- krez (krez_AT_optonline_DOT_net)
I think its a great idea to put real religious aspects into a game, if done correctly. It doesn''t even have to be about the religion, it can just be there. There are a lot of RPGs with religion in them, but its all made up and pretty fake-seeming. Seeing my character whisper the lords prayer before a big battle would be very .. i dunno. not a word for it, i guess. it would just be a nice touch of realism that doesnt require addition polygons.
And to all negative comments about this religion or that religion: What the hell is wrong with you? Can''t people ever discuss religion without dealing with that kind of bullshit? You and the rest of the immature punks need to grow up.

One pen and paper RPG game that I played that had religion as a large part came out of the GURPS Fantasy book.
The basic story line was that you were in a parallel world that people were occasionally sucked into from earth (Bermuda triangle, people who just mysteriously disappear, etc). They included large population of Christians, Moslems, etc. While all the religions were very similar, they evolved differently away from the Earth versions and had some interesting differences. Some religious sects accepted magic, others denounced it, etc. I though it was really well done.
These comments apply to Western European religions as I don''t know much about Eastern or American Indians/Inca religions.
To get an idea of why you are having problems finding people that won''t say negative things about some religion or another....
- People as a whole tend to see the bad in stuff. Take a look at your history lessons from school and compare how much time you spent discussing peaceful times to war times and who was killing who.
- Most religions teach that their way is the only way and that any other religion is not and leads to hell or it''s equivalent. And you know what happens when you tell people that their wrong and your right....
- There is a lot of power wrapped up in religion so it tends to draw people that want power for themselves. Historically the best way to hold on to power is to convince most people that you are better equipped to lead then they are and this has been done by convincing people that you are a god or get your appointment directly from god, Kings, Pharos, etc. Religion has also been cited as the reason for many wars/atrocities, i.e. Crusades, Spanish Inquisition, etc
Other than the above, what is there really to discuss? Most religions teach that you should not kill, steal, most rules of good conduct.

KarsQ: What do you get if you cross a tsetse fly with a mountain climber?A: Nothing. You can't cross a vector with a scalar.

it is an instant flamewar topic, because people have strong feelings about it and there is no way for either side to ever prove it is right (until they die, and even then they just get to know, not prove it to anyone else). hells, i react pretty badly to anything i consider preaching at me... but since this one is actually related to game development i have kept my opinion out of it.
btw - calling names won''t help anyone.

Check out Prison Tale. They have the best fighting system in the world and its free! http://www.pristontale.com
Also I like this game because you never fight other players and you can create parties to join other players to help you defeat more monsters, but keeps it fair and divides the exp fairly. If your in a party and your nowhere near the people your fighting with you won''t get any exp. Just check it out. I can''t tell you all the great stuff PT has that can be turned into the greatest Christian MMORPG.
Two more thing. I think you should have classes like in FF Tactics. VERY IMPORTANT THING YOU MUST REMEMBER! The more customized you can make your character the more you will feel a part of the game and you will play it longer.

Wouldn''t _Knights of the Old Republic_ with its main "avoid the easy temptation, follow the path of light... make up for the past sins and salve yourself *if* you are strong enough" theme... be essentialy a game that''s filled to the brink with those christian elements, without being 100% in-your-face obvious about it..?
it''s based on Star Wars ...

Its very easy to have "christian elements" in a game. Do not try to use it as propaganda though. Look at the "Matrix" trilogy. The story, names, characters, situations, take heavily from the bible. Bible aliterations everywhere. Why not try something like that. You can spread stories of the bible... subversively.

This is a neat idea. Heck, if you want to make a neat game that has a Christian element to it you could just have the main character be Christian. Make a police investigation game about an Irish Catholic detective in the 1930s who is investigating a string of robberies or murders or something, and make the player interview priests and shop owners to get the information he needs to crack the case. One or two of the characters could be a little preachy and pump the player full of Catholic dogma.
Heck, Boondock Saints was a sweet movie, and it had heavy religious overtones that only served to intensify the characters.

I haven''t seen the third one, so things may have changed. However, while the names in the Matrix are Christian, I would say the religion is more Buddhist.
