How many of you actually read the C# language reference ?
How many of you downloaded the compiler beta ?
After having done that, I agree, that C# is not suited
for game programming. It also won''t bring world peace or
end poverty or hunger.
BUT it is a very nice programming language, well planned
and implemented. It has many advantages. If you don''t
want them, you can turn them off.
Some issues I could not get over:
The IF statement MUST have a boolean argument in C#.
That''s about the best acomplishment for years !!!
All of you out there writing if(!fp) or something,
learn to program ! No more implicit type conversions !
Getting away with something does mean it is right.
C# ripoff of Java ?!?
NO !
They have similarities, but C# is much better implemented,
but has almost no OS-independecy.
If C# had such a crappy implementation as Java, I would
not touch it. I only say ''proper const keyword''.
Try to learn about both things you are comparing, or
you end up looking like a fool.
I did not read all the stuff on C# because I had to.
I am programming in C++. I know VB, some ASM, some Java
and some C#, because I''m interested in this. If you are
only clinging to C/C++ without looking left and right,
you are doomed to fail.
Don''t get me wrong, I do think, that C/C++ will dominate the
market in Games as in Business-Apps, but that does not mean
that C# is worse.

People use Visual Basic for fast development and thats even more SIMPLE than C# so whats better about C#?!?
C# presents no use really, does it? It really is an evil Micros*t ploy to thwart Sun and Java for good. I have no doubt in my mind that that is Microsofts primary reason for C#.
Microsoft are trying to do something like mixing the Enterprise with the Millenium Falcon to make one supership; it just doesn''t work like that. Their tacky 5-minute-glued-together job looks shabby as all hell and I''m suprised some people actually are looking forward to using it.
And as for the gaming industry, if anyone makes a game with C# let it be on their head. It will be their problem though, with a frame rate of about .2fps. I do realise though that games are not even a consideration for C# and I do not expect that of C#.
M-O-N-O-P-O-L-Y!!
PS I would like to thank Bill Gates for his better integration of XML in C#. Thankyou for making this standard set by you easier for people like us to use since we''re being practically forced to use it anyway.

Excuse me for saying this, as a moderator, but one day,
when your head finally manages to make it out of the end of your digestive system, you might actually find that there are tools out there that are very useful for some people.

Moderator or not, it''s naive of you to dismiss the idea that Microsoft might be doing something monopolistic.
I can''t see Microsoft releasing new versions of their APIs for both languages indefinitely, so even if C++ stays, it will be useless to Windows programmers. Therefore, MS are effectively discontinuing C++.
Although this is, I''m sure, a "GOOD thing" for Microsoft, who stand to own the entire programming language market, and control all the standards that go with it, it is a very BAD thing for people like me who don''t want to rewrite many thousands of lines of code in a couple of years because the latest version of Direct X is not compatible with C++.

To the AP (-nv) First of all, Java has the same bolean test restriction/feature that C# has. Also many languages have the FEATURE of implicity (especially a language like SML, where explicitness can be very time consuming). The java language has literally no OS dependency at all, whereas the c# will only work on windows, at least right now. I have heard of no plans for it to work on other OSs even if it is an ''open'' standard.
I understand that english may not be your first language, but can you tell elaborate more on how c# is superior to Java? It''s really easy to say ''c# rules java sucks'', but can you please back it up?
I also somewhat agree with madkeith that some people on this board should learn a bit more before they bash/defend something.
As a general note - can anyone tell me what the advantages of C# are over VB/C++/Java? Do you think it will cut devolpment time as much as VB? Will it be as safe as Java? My first impression is that it is no where near as powerful as c++. It seems to be trying to be the jack of all trades, but not really succeding...

I don''t think Microsoft plans on writing their API for more than one language. Or really any any specific language. If you''ll notice, they''re moving towards using COM or COM+ for absolutely everything in their OS, which is (IMO) a good thing. Then in whichever language we''re more comfortable using, we can just get the interface to whatever bit of the OS we need access to, and use it. Language independent. It makes it easier for them to maintain their OS, and keeps things consistent everywhere. Yay
Note, that this is just speculation, but it seems like a fairly logical way to go to me...

Well, if im generally stupid ben, then you lose all wars without US aid and have bad teeth, no offence tho, just a *generalization.* Please think next time before you use a generalizations, as generally, they are never true.

MadKeithV, I am not critisicing C# for no reason. I am giving perfectly good reasoning and/or speculation. As far as I''m concerned, it is my right to express my opinion and same with anyone else. Why don''t you join in the conversation instead of just having a go at us for having opinions. I have made an INFORMED opinion. Its not like I have''nt done my homework.
