"Talk about Games since this forum is all about that. 3/4 of the linux guys i know dont even know that a 3d card exists. all they know about is their networks run very well in this and it doesnt crash."

Umm, me and the thousands of other online gamers wouldnt be able to play shit if it werent for the networking capabilities and stability of linux/unix servers around the world. My Half-Life/Quake games would be collecting dust if not for the "linux geeks" that definately do know about 3d cards. On the contrary, linux geeks will be more up to date on hardware than most average windows users.

"it pays to use windows since it doesnt take years to figure out how a comp works if u use it. a layman can easily jump right in and start working. a home user simply wouldnt want linux."

My mother recently had to take a computer usage seminar because they are using computers at her work now. She could barely work a mouse, but whether they taught her Windows or some other GUI, she would have learned just as fast. And at my work, the secretaries despise MS and their office programs. They wish they could use WordPerfect5.1 (yes, blue screen text mode only) which was more elegant and easier to do things quickly, but MS was pushed on them too and now I have to put up with complaints about problems with printing and other features. Thanks to MS innovation, to print a 50 page document on regular bond paper with the first page on their letterhead, they have to print out each page one at a time.

"unix is still alive since it has been around since the 70''s"

What kind of argument is that? I guess I should break out my stove pants.

"linux is alive since it is a unix+windows clone"

linux is alive because of the support and effort put in by its developers and promoters.

"think - games in linux. thnx to windows a guy can code easily."

Well, my team is currently working on a game that will be playable on both Windows AND Linux compiled from the same code. So how is it easier because of Windows?

"powerbuilder, netscape, delphi, os/2 are all dead.
java, linux , wait in line..."

Java and linux are likely going to boom first. Java is now taught instead of C++ in many universities as the introductory comp sci.

"find apps like 3dsmax, photoshop in linux. people wouldnt make things for linux like that, even if they did everything would be GNU. that is not very good"

More and more programs are being converted to Linux by bigger companies, and slowly others are following suit. And what''s wrong with GNU?

"linux is a geeks OS. it was, will remain GNU and will never threaten windows"

It is a geeks OS, yes, but that will likely change with time.

And if it will never threaten Windows, why is MS so worried with performance trials pitched against Linux trying to prove that they are better?

They don''t have to prove anything, they are obviously far superior.

MajorD, I don''t think we can change MetalDorX mind...he doesn''t want to deal with "facts".

"there is no planning in the devolopment of linux since it is modified to suit according to current need. it isnt commercial. no one would take the resp if something goes wrong."

What do you mean "if something goes wrong"? Linux is gonna come alive and kill people? This isn''t "War Games".
I''m sure Linus will take the rap.
I''m not even going to continue this madness. You are right, I lose...let''s all hook windows into our veins and drool over how great it is while we fantasize about pleasuring Bill Gates.

And yes,

Way off topic...
The windowed OS for the AtariST was GEM. I think it was either the first or second *consumer* GUI available, and I believe it was available for multiple sets of hardware. Does anyone else out there know what I''m talking about?

Thats the one SonicSilicon. And your right about multiplatform. Infact - the first GUI OS I ever saw on the IBM PC was indeed Gem. Were talking a long time ago though
Figures someone from the UK would know more about GEM and AtariST than I. Thanks vallis!
I made a little error in my last post. I should have said there would probably be no good software and/or programming languages if it wasn''t for Bills Gates.
Does anyone listen to Destiny''s Child, TLC, or Sammie?
That''s funny, I don''t remember Bill Gates inventing C, C++, or Ada (which is a nice language, even if no one uses it). OpenGL is a nice API, I suppose we can thank Mr. Gates for developing that too.

I''m developing a nice game for the Dolphin and I thank Mr. Gates for his input everyday.

You know what I mean Kyle.
Does anyone listen to Destiny''s Child, TLC, or Sammie?
Sorry, it''s been a long day and I don''t mean to take it out on anonymous strangers...
Thanking Bill Gates for everything right with the computer world is like thanking Al Gore for inventing the Internet.

I find these little arguments so funny to read through. While I use Windows to play my games I hate it. It is really unbelievable to listen to brainwashed Windows-zealots talk about how "great" Win9X is.

Hi flamers! =)

I too would like to say something. Windows do crash a lot, but only because it has so much features that interacts with each other. I haven''t tried any other OS, except Unix, so I cannot speak about them, but I think that Windows must be the largest operative system that exist. I don''t mean how many people that uses it, but how much space it takes on the harddrive. Win98 currently takes up almost 500 MB on my disk.

I wonder how much of this I actually use, while playing games and programming. I cannot understand why it has to be so big.

Also, I''m curious about BeOS how good is it? What does it support? Where can I get more info?
