As DarkWing says - I got SDL down to less than 80K with UPX.
Hey DarkWing, isnt using UPX a little bit cheeky? I mean decompressing your compressed files @ runtime seems like using more than ur 500k to me ..... but I''ll have a look anyway ...

As for that screenie - looking good - better than I can do anyway!

I asked NeHe and he said it's OK to use it. And size on disk is the only thing that matters. (and how do you think 64k demos work???)

I`ve send my entry™ to NeHe and he didn`t reply and shit....
Is there another way to submit stuff ?
I wonder if Yahoo made some stupid mystakes with my attachment...

quiz! is the loading of textures at run-time from web considered when thinking of those 500KB ?
Nope, it isnt but remember some people dont have permanent internet connections (like me) so having to be on the net each time when viewing your demo would be bad - also if people use modems (like me) then downloading 512k worth of one texture each time it runs would be rather binding .....

I agree with Wolfman here. People with no permanent internet connections will hate you. Have you considerd switching to better compressed format (jpeg/djvu) or using zlib(or something simmilar) to (de)compress data at runtime to reduce size? How about creating your own format?

If you convert everything to jpg you should be fine - grabbin the textures off the net is sort of a last resort.
yeah, all my textures are jpegs but I have another problem , namely sound ... 1.35 mins of mp3 sampled at 16 khz mono , that being the lowest quality I could let myself use , is nearly 200 kb, that and fmod.dll are together more then 320 kb, that leaves me with nearly nothing for textures & .exe ....
For audio, MIDIs or MODs are a better bet. Though, they''re not as generic as MP3.
