Oh sorry, I thought that it was clear, I''m from finland

Time comes, time goes and I only am.
In a lingustics class I once took I learned that there are three languages in Europe that linguists really do not know where they came from and are totally unique from the rest of the European languages. They are Finnish, Basque (the north of Spain) and another one I can''t remember.

Just thought I''d point that out in case anyone didn''t know. My Finnish friend who speaks Swedish (and not Finnish) also thinks that Finnish is one crazy language.

Well? Then there must be a whole bunch of unknown languages, because natives in the most north-russia are relative languages to Finnish as odd as it sounds. Also the language of Lapland is very odd and it is relative language to finnish as viena''s karelia, komi, udmurt and mari and, well some others that i can''t remember. Actually, we are coming from Ural, where we camed from Africa, but that is a lot of time ago. Every single human being is from Africa, well not directly, but as odd it sound we are from there ;-)

Time comes, time goes and I only am.
The proliferation and fragmentation of languages as people migrate from one land to another has always fascinated me. (I just didn't have time for too many linguistics classes with all of my CSci classes) I just don't know how or why exactly it would happen. Even just the transformation within languages is strange (maybe even more so), why did English go from old, to middle to modern? (obviously those names are modern names, but the languages are vastly different in many areas.

On some site online I see that Finnish is part of a group called the Dinno-Ugrians. It is related to Estonian, Lapp (as you mentioned), Mari, Ugrian, Hungarian and then Basque is listed, but I am pretty sure it is not related, but only listed with this group of languages.

Maybe I totally misunderstood the professor talking about not knowing where the languages came from. But I seem to remember him saying it straight out. Though I would think that it is conceivable that their exact origins and evolutions are not known.

Just want to comment on Spiffs remarks about the EU. The Swedish government is more restrictive than EU when it comes to bringing alcohol into the country. After all, it''s EU who wants to abolish the restrictions. So you can not really hold that against EU unless you are in favour of the restrictions, are you Spiff?

About the spam laws that would allow companies to spam people legally. I think that law is a Swedish invention too. Our dear government listened to the industry''s argument that it would hurt the industry in the country if they could not send unsolicited mail to the consumers/citizens. Do not be fooled, so called ''socialist'' governments are as big puppies to BB (big business) as non-socialist ones, only the justifications differ.

This letter was not meant as a defence of EU but I think you should choose other arguments when you criticize that institution. After all, some say that the best way to defeat an idea is to defend it with bad arguments.
