Way back in this old post I mentioned discovering Crocotile and Sprytile. Those are tools (one standalone, and one an addon for Blender) that are used to create 3D objects out of pixel art tiles. In that post I mentioned wanting to experiment with those tools; that was 4 years ago and I never did, oops! Well I finally got around to it, and here’s my initial result:
That was after launching Crocotile for the first time just 15 minutes prior, so pretty cool tool! I immediately replaced the built-in tileset with one I downloaded, learned how the camera controls work, and went to town from there. After modeling the raised area, but before taking that screenshot, I did also learn about and setup some basic lights (I guess that part took me past 15 minutes, sorry I lied) because it was really hard to judge were things were in 3 dimensions when everything was fullbright.
As I ramp up to production of my next game, I’ve been ruminating on art styles. I had a couple ideas for directions to go, with “pixel art in 3D” being one possibility. Well after seeing how well creating that went, I’m almost certainly going with that approach.
In my earlier post I mentioned Sprytile, but the last commits to that project were 5 years ago, so it seems kinda dead. At the time I was planning to start experimenting with Sprytile first, but this time I decided to just skip the abandoned project and go straight to Crocotile.
