If you know the full name, with the domain, yeah. For instance, I can find the host "chromium" from here.... but if I go to Spain, I''ll have to search for "chromium.usc.edu".

i''m using gethostbyname(), which takes teh machine name tag, not the net address (example, s2g5w4 vs ftp.microsoft.com) - the same number that appears in your computer info or is printed on the back of your case.

It sounds like you''re talking about a Microsoft Networking computer name. No, you can''t get that across the internet, as name resolution requires broadcast.
