gethostbyname
does function work for the entire network or just the sybsystem? i mean, if i know the machine name, can i find it anywhere on the internet?
If you know the full name, with the domain, yeah. For instance, I can find the host "chromium" from here.... but if I go to Spain, I''ll have to search for "chromium.usc.edu".
i can see what you are saying, but i''m not sure we are talking about the same thing. more specifically:
i''m using gethostbyname(), which takes teh machine name tag, not the net address (example, s2g5w4 vs ftp.microsoft.com) - the same number that appears in your computer info or is printed on the back of your case.
please confirm...

It sounds like you''re talking about a Microsoft Networking computer name. No, you can''t get that across the internet, as name resolution requires broadcast.
Alex, socket questions go in the Networking forum, so I''m moving this and your other thread.
