How about being able to play as an Indian Shaman/witch doctor? As long as your not after too much realism, I think it could work as a limited equivalent of a mage. Calling down on the spirits of your ancestors to curse the white men or to call on the powers of nature to blow guns out of hands would be pretty cool IMHO.
