Do yourself a favor though. Pick saguaros or sandstone mesas, but not both. Westerns typically make this mistake. Saguaros are the low desert: Sonoran. Sandstone mesas are the high desert: the Colorado Plateau. They don''t mix.

A Sim: SimCity-ish city management game where you have to run your Gold Rush era town. Bring in gambling and crime (i.e. outlaws) grows. Build new housing, and prospectors may rush in, but so might "less desirables". Disasters include attacks by outlaws, "the wells goin'' dry", and the like.
That sounds fun! "less desirables", haha!
This mob blows.
There is a wild wild west game. I saw it in the shops a while ago.
There is also supposed to be an excellent western adventure by Cyberflix, called "Dust", but I don''t think it was ever published in Europe and I can''t get a copy.
It may interest you to know that the old west idealised by the spaghetti westerns (so called, apparently, because they were actually filmed entirely in Spain), was quite incredibly inaccurate, notably with the gunfights.
There is actually only one recorded incident of a one on one pistol duel in a street in the old west. Everybody else sneaked up and shot you in the back, like normal people.
Also, the winchester rifle, while rapid firing, was actually very weak, because it fired pistol cartridges. For a more powerful rifle, you''d have used a muzzle loader, like the springfield.

Yes, but it would be a bloody uninteresting game if we stuck to the facts. And I think they were called spaghetti westerns because they were directed and filled with Italians, but that''s just my guess.
Anywho, the setting with lots of gunfights is what people expect. And historical accuracy is never a really big issue. Does anyone here think peasants went out and harvested wood, stone, gold, and food, then came back in to make soldiers one at a time, cause that''s what Age of Empires did?
Cerro Gordo was described as being a shooting gallery, among other things. Its mines did produce 4.5 million ounces of silver though.

I''ve not played it, but I think there''s a Western mod for Quake 3. Might be worth a shot (hehe).

The best WWW game I ever played and enjoyed was Sunset Riders. It''s old school arcade/SNES but it was fun as hell at the time. (not much replay value though)

The HalfLife mod was Gunman Chronicles, and it wasn''t a Western - it was a little inspired by them, but it was set in space.
This genre is, indeed, pretty much untapped. The most interesting things that I know of were the people, of course - any game would have to involve them heavily. Perhaps something where you''re the sherriff trying to solve a crime? You have to go to meet people and question them, search for clues, and of course the whole time, watch your back....
(damn, I''m just flowing today... wish I had some free time... =] )
