I have recently noticed my video card in my Gateway M320 which is 3 years old over heats, or gets really really hot almost to the point of just the presence of my hands on the keyboard you can feel heat. What are your suggestions on fixing this matter besides going out and buying a brand new laptop? Anything I can do before going to some store and buying a cooling mat for my laptop?

Clean the dust. Buy one of those spray cans.
