Re-installing Linux
OK, I''ve decided that I''m going to re-install Linux. Basically, I''m having problems with libraries, and I just want to start from scratch. What I plan on doing is not for the light-hearted, but I''m pretty sure I can do it. Here''s my idea:
1. Backup and wipe my old version from my Linux partitions.
2. Use MuLinux (A single-floppy Linux distro.) at first, until I get Linux working at an acceptable level on my hard drive.
Acceptable level:
-I can access the BASH shell.
-I can access the internet via Lynx and FTP.
3. Get the latest stable version of everything in .tar.gz form, and re-install (and re-compile?) everything. I''m going to try to avoid .rpm''s because I have a hard time getting them to work together with everything else.
-I''ll want to know how to configure the kernel, but I''ve already got some documentation on that. Heck, I might even use the old kernel.
-I know a little bit about the directory structure, but I''ll want to know more about it.
-The first things I''ll want to install after I get Linux working at an acceptable level are GCC and utilities to untar and unzip files.
-Any advice will be helpful.
-Any advice on the very first steps I should take after I wipe my hard drive will be extremely helpful. No, I won''t be changing my partitions; my hard drive is already partitioned the way I like.
-Please give helpful advice with your criticisms.
-Please, no flaming: I will probably print this thread out, so I don''t want to print realms of useless nonsense.

If you want to guarantee a clean install and all, check out www.linuxfromscratch.org which allows you to build a custom linux box with none of the fluff.
Thanks. That''s exactly what I''m looking for.
