Since most of us here want to make games (for a living or for fun) why not have the contest be who can create the best (as in the most fun) game? Since everyone has different skills, the games can be anything from full 3d doom3 clones to side scrollers. Everyone can vote on what game they though was the most fun out of all of them.

The rules can be simple: has to be a full game or atleast a fully playable and non buggy demo. It must use opengl for graphics, it must have some sorta physics, basic sounds, etc and the code has to be your own (NO CHEATING!!!!). The game that seems to have had the most effort put into it to make it as fun as possible...

C'mon guys, this would be really cool!

edit: code has to be your own: what I ment was, no modifying another open source game. However, you could say use game tutorials bsp loading code if you wanted... what do you guys think about this?

Let me guess, that's exactly what you do...

I don't know what the above posters problem is but at one point we all learned.

A game just won't work. It takes far too long, i've been working on a game for 14 months and were not done yet. A demo is a realistic goal that every one can do.

Can u guys think of any thing else we have to decide on?

Here are a few things:
- does it have to be a futuristic city or just cities in general?
- should we run an ftp server to submit entries?
- is there going to be any sharing of art?
- are we going to let other communities (ie the art forum on www.milkshape3d.com, ect) in on the contest to provide art?
- if so, how is this going to be managed
- are there going to be any effect limitations (ie no metaballs)?
- whats the target system (this is kinda important with the new cg stuff floating around)?

No sense restriciting the theme to a futuristic city. A city theme in itself is actually quite a broad theme. The first thing that springs to mind is a large futuristic city. And with that you could do alot of stuff... But, nothing is stopping you from creating a backwards medieval town, nestled in a small valley with great sprawling landspcapes all around, mountains in the distance, and a river trickling through the forested hills. Although, this might have been digressing a little from the theme, you could somehow make your village/city an important part of the demo, nonetheless.

Anyway, as for sharing of art... I don't know. If someone makes some cool art, I guess it would be kind to share it, but... Then again, I'd be loath to see the same models used in every single demo.

Effect limitations are pointless. Period.

In Previous NeHe contests, the community has voted for the demo they like best, and then the votes have been counted to decide the winner. In this way, I feel that if you make a damn good demo, but it is only supported on a handful of the voters' machines, you probably won't get many votes, because few people could see your demo... So, like Matrix said, the developer should decide the target platform.
Tera from what I read you were mocking that guy for using tutorials. I think it is a bit silly as this is a learning based site/board. If I mis-understood accept my appologies.

actually I learn by reading things and then implementing the stuff my self ;)

He is just messing with you. Most tutorials are simple features of OpenGL. You can't really get around the GL_BEGIN, GL_VERTEX, GL_END procedures. Everybodies code is going to look exactly like the tutorials, unless they masked it in objects.
*News tagenigma.com is my new domain.
So most people want to a city theme.

Now all we have to do is decide what the requirements should be.
Should the developer decide?
Should it run on fx cards and above?
Should it run on Gforce 4 cards and above?
Should it run on things lower then Gforce4s?

EDIT: Oh and how long should it be?

It sounds like no restrictions is what most people want.

I wonder if NeHe is seeing any of this.
