NeHe contest theme?
After walking through this mini-amusement park in Yokohama yesterday, I kinda thought it would be good to model some of these rides. One was a small regular style rollercoaster, another this compact mini-coaster where the seats spin around as it goes, and the other was a water ride like coaster. Perhaps a good contest would be to write a theme/amusement park ride. Lots of graphcs, physics/simulation, and realism involved.
City sounds like a great idea. A lot of possibilities :)

Anyone ever seen the anime "Ghoast Inside The Shell". It has some incredible city scapes and scenes. I think I might try something like that. Either that or a Sim City-esque theme partially based on my previous ideas.

I can see the fnords.

I like the dreams theme most, but if everyone wants a city theme, that's OK with me...
Newbie programmers think programming is hard.Amature programmers think programming is easy.Professional programmers know programming is hard.
Nice to see such interest in a new contest :) I like the idea of a city theme. Its quite open, feature wise, but gives everyone some direction. I would prefer a 2-3 month development timespan as its quite tough trying to squeeze in demo development while working a job full time, and 2 weeks / 1 month just isn't enough to acomplish a level of quality I'd like to reach.
Can u guys think of any thing else we have to decide on?
Here are a few things:
- does it have to be a futuristic city or just cities in general?
- should we run an ftp server to submit entries?
- is there going to be any sharing of art?
- are we going to let other communities (ie the art forum on www.milkshape3d.com, ect) in on the contest to provide art?
- if so, how is this going to be managed
- are there going to be any effect limitations (ie no metaballs)?
- whats the target system (this is kinda important with the new cg stuff floating around)?

These are some good questions. I think quite a few of us plan to be using shadders so I think a good target would be the geforce fx+ (ati 9600 +). I realize this means some of the community won't be able to view the demos but I think a large enough % of members have access to this kind of hardware. On the other hand I know a few want to use PS3 programs but not many of us have a 6800 to run that kind of demo.
I don't see the point of limiting effects. If some one wants to put in metaballs it won't stand out as great if it's not really fitting the theme.
If jeff goes with a city I think there shouldn't be any limit on it being futuristic or not. Who knows, some one may do a great 1920's chicago or somthing like that.
Keep the input going.
