By giving cell shading theme you automatically excludes people who doesn't have GF 6800 or FX! .

But i do have one (GF 6800 ULTRA to be exact), so expect some pixel shaders 3 goodness. :)

Infact i have allready started to plan some of the scenes to be included, i mean, i have to design and create all the graphics in an entire MMORPG game within the next few months anyway, so why not do everything at once, it's better than not doing anything at all.

(and yes, one or more of the scenes i have layed out is in full cellshaded glory.)

I certanly hope we can get things started soon.
I dont think you should push for a contest where you have done the work at some point in time. That's why I've tried to stay away from a natural theme suggustion - I just recently finished a paper and demo for game programming gems on simulating natural effects. It would suck(for me) if the contest was on natural effecs bc I would have to do no work.

It would also be bad if we excluded bc of the type of vdo card they had. The best contests that have been run have had a ton of entries; its always fun to look at the work everyone has done.

I think in the next contest we should push for something centered around a more complex architecture. It shouldn't be something like a movie or clip bc programming a framework to do that has been done and is simple. Something along the lines of a "Retro" games theme would be cool. Rewrite your favorite oldschool game.

To tease ourselves the theme could be make the best looking demo that also runs on old hardware with tnt graphic chips. With a bit of efford some nice effects can be made with those.

Or let's go even further, let's do everything in software and just display it with openGL, NOT!

Hardware limitations are not that great, it's limits what cool stuffwe can make.

I have a GF 6800 ULTRA and i want to be able to stress it abit with the demos, however I think a resonable level to aim for is the GF3.
But please make a ultra detail mode avalible. :)

I think an NPR theme would be cool. Something like "The Living Sketchbook", you wouldn't only do cel-shading or hatching effects, but interesting transitions where the images starthand drawn and then come to life. I think you could make some nice stuff that way.

Also, I would like to participate, but I'm telling you now that my program will be SM2.0 with a good helping of SM3.0 for those with 6800 to enjoy.

I can see the fnords.
Bullet time sounds good, but I can merely think all entries will look the same : some kind of black-weared guy falling, either firing bullets (3DMark-style) or dodging bullets (Matrix-style) in slow motion.

I personnally love Final Fantasy, but I can hardly think how you could setup a contest around that. The FF universe is simply too rich !

lc_overlord : you're very good if you can make a MMORPG in six months ! good luck.

As for demos targeted at the GeForce 6800 series, keep in mind very few of us will be able to execute them. It's already a hard task to make ARB_vp/fp working for a wide range of users even if the specs are two years old.

I think NPR-based contest is just too vague too. Looks like I'm very harsh today isn't it ^^'

I'd say 3 months is okay. I just wouldn't like anything below one month or over three months.

Well I meant NPR focused.

Like I said the theme itself would be the transformation of an idea or image from thought to sketch to 3d imagery. I think that's fairly specific while allowing a lot of flexiblity, plus it will cause people to analyse their artistic and creative process and perhaps making it better/more efficent.

As for the shaders I meant I would have optional SM3.0 stuff for those with Geforce 6xxx cards, but as I said it's optional, so it would still work with SM2, just some goodies would be missing.

I can see the fnords.
Here's a proposal:

There's been tons of contests about nature. Why not taking the opposite direction ? Rendering a modern (or sci-fi) city, that looks as big and as complex/industrial as possible, and as alive as possible. With enough time it'd even be possible to have cars or people walking in the streets.. just an idea.

Y.

Thanx, im feeling lucky. :)

Well i got to about april, it's not a full mmorpg(more like a tecnical demonstrator that has the capability of greatness), and im not the only one on the team, we got four coders besides me, But im the one that has to do all the graphics, animations, textures and UI.
I think i can safely say that i officialy have no life from now on to until im done.
No, please don't make theme! It should be free! I have great ideas for demos and effects but if you give me cell-shading I would not participate, because I don't like cell shading, it looks the same all the time (does cartoons look diffrent?). I don't like cells and I'm not gonna write it.
It should be free. Someone likes cells so he will do cells, someone likes shadows, he will do shadows. Someone have great super hiper idea for motion blur, and you give cell theme - his idea would not be used by others.
You post themes because you like somethings, like cell-shading, and you are good at it, so you say: "let's make it cell-shading!", but others doesn't like it at all.
That's why it should be free.
