Anyone that thinks 2D games don''t sell is sadly misinformed --
Diablo II has been the hottest game (sales wise) pretty much since it was released. Also, Who Wants to be A Millionaire has sold a ton. Same for Roller Coaster Tycoon...And Age of Empires II....In fact, on any given month, there tends to more (sometimes many more) 2D games on the top 10 sales lists than 3D games..
2D - What's the point?

I think 2D is still VERY important. A recent review of "Legend of Mana" (PSX) in Edge magazine pointed out that "3D is as much a style as it is a medium". 2D graphics have a charm and simplicity that 3D may never have. It''s all very well talking about Age of Empires 2, Diablo, Commandos etc... but they would all have looked as good in 3D (with a high enough poly count). I think better examples of where 2D is actually better than 3D are games like Metal Slug (Arcade/Saturn/Neo Geo/NGPC), SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighters'' Clash (NGPC) and of course, Street Fighter(particularly the sublimely animated Street Fighter III).
I also agree that overhead is better than isometric, and I''m glad to see you want to put in a good story and awesome gameplay!
If you want to check out cutting edge 2D gameplay I think you should play on the latest portable games and Sega Saturn games. I too am developing in 2D at the moment and these have been my biggest inspiration.

Mr. Anonymous Poster. I totally agree with you. I absolutely loved Legend of Mana''s graphics. Also, just a point, I really like 2D on 3D like in Xenogears and Breath of Fire III. Although I hate the plot of BOF III, it sucked bigtime.

I think everyone is missing the point. The 2D vs 3D debate could go on forever. The only thing that matters (or should anyway) is game play. Period. While your average joe will buy a game because it looks cool, hardcore gamers want good games. I think the market has been saturated with 3D dazzlers that were utter crap. 3D games are no longer a novelty.
Perhaps in the future 2D games will no longer cut it, but for now, as has already been mentioned, they are alive and well.

I think 2D games are great and prefer them over 3D games due to my hardware because I can''t run them. The requirements for 3D games is rediculous and not needed. They are way over bloated.

games need 3d, like imaging a FPS in 2d. Ugh =)
Hi.
Don''t go that far, there is a very old coin operated game called "Empire City", it is a 2D first person shooter and in my opinion is great, at least for the time it was released.
I remeber I accidentally connected 120 volts to one of the signal pins on the PC board and fried to it death I replaced a few integrated circuits and got it partially working... sans sprites

there are WAY WAY WAY too many misinformed children rampaging through these boards. I''m sick of kids. You should listen more and post less. I see so much crap come out of so many posts on these boards that it has begun to piss me off. I realize it''s a free board, and people have the right to say whatever, but i''m sick of wading through 6 pages of absolute crap to find an intelligent answer to a question. Kids, you dont have the skills yet, you need to learn more. Most of you dont even know what you dont know. I realize this is more junk to sift through, but i had to say it.

WTF are you talking about? Did you bother thinking before you posted that? Where did you get that data from? So many horrible misguided responses, so much blatant crap posted. My advice to the young ones trying to learn is DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ. Because you read it on the net, doesnt always make it so. Use your noggins to sift through that kind of BS that seems to crop up everywhere nowadays.

2D games rule, they have the best gameplay and easier character movement, along with half decent storylines...
A few of my favorites...
Donkey Kong Country.
Great Giana Sisters.
Super Mario World.
Zelda 3.
CastleVania 4.
(Live on SNES and Amiga)
Its a shame there are so many 3D games that really suck! I''d rather play a decent 2D game than an off-the-shelf 3D game ANYDAY.
I think it all depends on the individual, and how much gaming experience they have.
If u r like me and have been playing games since the SNES, u tend to go for in-depth games like Zelda, Rainbow Six, Quake3Arena, and flight simulators...
If u r a computer illiterate person u would probably play games that have instant appeal like Need for speed, sports game(ergh),
and tomb Raider, in which I find all boring and a waste of time.
Im making a 2D game right now and I can garrantee its going to be an enjoyable, in-depth game, unlike the hundreds of 3D games out now.
