the only thing that limits you graphicaly 2d, is the skill of your team of artists. I will refer to legend of mana yet again when I say that with the same amount of intent, a 2d game could be arguably better. 2d RPG''s are a hell of a lot better than the 3d ones i think. but whatever. people who write the tetris games are not doing anything new and i agree that they do not nessisarily deserve praise. but hey, writing a working program is like building a good model or writing a good story. everyone want to say " hey look at me" at least once in their lives.

2d is fine, 3d does has some advantages (uses less ram for example) but 2d work great. Starcraft is 640x480 with 256 colors and it is probably the most popular game ever, it finally fell off the top ten in SALES.... two and a half years after its release! Not to mention that at any given time (and I mean any time) you can go online and see 50000 people playing it on battle.net, that''s right now. Apparently 2d didn''t hurt their sales. Right now there is this other game I''m waiting for, Strifeshadow (ethermoon.com) and it is in 2d and their site gets more than 5000 hits a day, in a couple of months they''ll be rolling in money and without the use of 3d. Don''t get me wrong, I like 3d but you got to get it right. Of course all that really matters is gameplay. Even sound is more important that graphics (no really, keep that in mind when designing sound effects)
I think the only different between 2D and 3D (in the end) is what you do with them.
Take (since it was just brought up) starcraft for example. If it were possible to have the same camera angle, and the same action and gameplay. But make it 3D so that objects could cast light onto each other et cetera, it would look nicer (hopefully), and be the same game...
It all depends on what you do with it, I like a lot of 2D games that could be 3D but be the same except for their graphics...
That is not to say that by being able to be 3D means it would have been better that way or has to be 3D.

Just to prolong this thread again
I got Baldurs Gate 2 a couple days ago which is 2D (and yeh I know it has ogl support but it aint 3d)
Anyone who has played this game would be insane to say its graphics ARENT 100x better than what you could create in a realtime 3D game.
Tho I still like 3D games, I think for lush visuals 2D can very much stand up for itself

I don''t want to add to the debate of 2d vs. 3d, because it''s all about your personal preference. Personally I like 2d games better. I remember when Wolfenstien 3d first came out. I played that game all day every day. But then it got old. Since then, with the exeption of the Nintendo titles, I have only played 2 more 3d games all the way thru, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. I don''t even really like Perfect Dark, I just played it because it is like Goldeneye. 3d games just don''t keep me interested enough to finish them. But a good 2d game will keep me up all night, every night until i finish it. Remember the entire Sierra collection. Those are classics. Don''t get me wrong, I think 3d looks great, but I think that most developers focus on that too much and it takes away from the gameplay. Like STV Elite Force. Sure it looks amazing, but you''re still just walking around shooting for no real reason. That''s why I like Goldeneye so much, because of the objectives you need to complete. And any game where you get to play as the mega pimp James Bond is awesome. I''m rambling now, sorry. I''ve been playing games since the early eighties, and I must say that I''m disapointed in the current state of games. I think the quality just when downhill fast after Doom. I think the Super Nintendo was the last really good platform, and Sierra was the last really good computer developer. If developers are going to insist on making 3d games, then they need to start making them more interesting. I say you should make your 2d game, I think there are still enough of us old school gamers to make it worth your while. I would definetly enjoy a good 2d game. Thats just my opinion, I don''t mean to start a debate, I know how it gets on this forum.
2D rules! UFO, terror from the deep, Apocalypse, CIV2, Alpha Centauri, K240, diablo, Fallout etc. Now what are the best 3D games? Half-Life? Quake3? Tomb-Raider(I hope not)? Unreal Tournament? I''ll take 2d Iso games anyday!

I agree that the snes was a major milstone in gamedevelopment. but can we also agree that the playstation rounded off the RPG market? I beleive that the playstation wrote the book on what a good rpg can be. almost all of them are 2/3D with the exception of vagrant story. I will personally miss the little PSX as its bigger brother steals its lunch money

StarCraft; Alpha Centauri; Age Of Empires; Warcraft; The Sims. All great games. Notice all these games are the kind that require *Actual Thinking* and problem solving abilities. I like the way that in most 2D games you can develop very in depth strategies.
Don''t get me wrong. 3D is obviously more capable of producing better games. Take Homeworld. What a game! Combines strategy, simulation, real-time, and smooooth graphics. But in the industry time is a big issue and most people who make the strategy style games use 2D because it is quicker. 3D is used largely for shoot ''em ups and car and flight sims etc. The sort of real-time action game that we all enjoy playing from time to time.
To sum up, I don''t think 2D is dead at all. People but 2D games. Bottom line. Publishers will always accept a good 2D game just as readily as a 3D game. To gamers, how many dimensions a game has is simply a technicality, and they frankly don''t care if it is 2D or 4D..(I suppose a 3D game is sort of 4D but I don''t like to think about it too much).
