Are you missing the point? It is not about what has never been done before (although some of it hasn''t) but it is more about what should be thought about. I can''t believe how many games just stick to the same-old-same-old. Might and Magic had herbal magic (for potions) but I still mentioned it. What the document is about is expanding peoples minds, who have just been exposed to Diablo as their only source of game inspiration.

Yes, (I think) I got the point, but reading the document gave me the (as it seems, false) impression that you hadn''t seen these features before. You should give examples of games that have implemented the features you mention, as a reference to whoever wants to implement them in their game.

The truth be told that *I* (specifically) haven''t seen these in games. But that is why I mention those which I have. I am sure I wrote something to that end at the beginning (in the notes). If so, then give me a list of games which I could suggest to people

Ultima-series, Exile-series, Nahlakh / Natuk, Nethack, ADOM, Angband (and various versions) come quickly to mind.

Thanks for the list, but it would be more helpful if you could apply it specifically to each topic. Otherwise I stumble around blindly

I have been writing up a few more paragraphs, still looking for things that I have missed. Does anybody remember anything that I have said that I would add which I haven''t yet?

Here these words vilifiers and pretenders, please let me die in solitude...
Sorry that I havent replied in, well, about a month. I have been on holidays and have been unable to get too much posting done. Thanks for doing that much of the doc, I am checking it out now. I have a new version that I am working on that is up around 19,000 words... I hope to get a few of the spelling errors out and also get some pictures in before I upload it.

Once again... Thanks

i read through that doc and what i found interesting was the point about hp and armor.
I dont know if this is at all important or if this is utter bs but i thought i would chuck one of my ideas into the mix.
characters have hp as always but they are not dead untill certain stats reach zero.by this i mean that hp should qualify more as deffense and your power, resistance stats govern your survival after the HP is spent.I will clearify.

you receive a new armor and you equip it. the stat that determins Hp (whatever it may be since it can very DME "divine material Energy" has been used before)
is increased slightly as is your deffensive stat. these two in parallal determine the drop in your energy level. after the Hp(or whatever) is spent, you start to lose stats rather rapidly everytime you get hit. basically the battle isnt over untill you can no longer lift your weapon. given, in most cases it would only take one hit after your hp is gone but this makes it a little harder to die. I dont know, battle is not really my specialty in rpg design

Hey, sounds like fun. Then you can see what kind of damage you can do to hackers. Just check to see if their armour is valid. If it isn''t then don''t let them know that, then when they get hit they lose stats instead of HP. Hehe, it is ingenious . Good Idea though FE

Well hey. what good is 999 Hp if you are a pethetic weakling and unable to swing your sword?

Wb Dwarfie, now I can be the abstraction monster again!

1. What are HP used for?
Well, to represent the relative health of a character. You could say the relative strength or weakness of a character, with strength in its broadest sense.

2. What are stats used for?
To show or encode the strengths and weaknesses of characters.

3. What happens if you look at 1. and 2. side by side?
You start wondering why we need HP! If your stats decline, as has been mentioned here, you get the effect of HP without needing y.a.a.n. ( Yet Another Abstract Number ).

So I think it''s a great idea - plus it will actually have INTERESTING effects on your character besides ''Oh hell, only 1 hp left, better run to the healer for some potions.''

People might not remember what you said, or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

It's only funny 'till someone gets hurt. And then it's just hilarious.Unless it's you.
