I suggest you tone down the level of aggressiveness in your posts, paulkp, or I shall be forced to take action.

OUR Doc - The future of RPGs
It's only funny 'till someone gets hurt. And then it's just hilarious.Unless it's you.
I agree. be a little more tactfull in the future. Although i have to somewhat agree with you about the fact of cuts and bleeding. I guess how you take damage would affect you wouldnt it. but who knows. RPG''s are only supposed to mimic real life in certain ways. In real life if you get hit by a massive bastard sword, you are not getting up I dont care how big and cool you are. that is why these are fantasy games. am i wrong?

It all depends on where you want to put the emphasis in your game. If it will be on realistic, visceral swordfighting, having cuts and bruises would definately be a good thing. However, if combat is only a small part of the overall scope of your game, then you don''t want to go overboard on details. They will just lead to a cluttered interface and a lot of bewildered players that do not know the possibilities of the game.

It''s all about gameplay..
Gameplay is defined by the rules of the game, and by the freedom you are given by the game designer (and level designer at a lesser extent).
So discussing what''s wrong with current RPG allow us to set up a new set of rules (and so a new gameplay) for our next games.
This is usefull, and considering how much I think current so called RPG sucks, I really hope that something else will come.
For example a RPG that IS NOT ABOUT FIGHTING AND KILLING EVERYTHING AROUND !
(NO CRPG available is like that to my little knowledge.)
I''m sick of meeting creatures randomly generated, with no reason to be there, and only one behavior KILLING YOU.
I''m sick of those stupid and unrealistic battles, and most important, I''m sick to see people always fighting instead of trying to find original solutions.
In games the only answer is FIGHT, unless there''s nothing to fight, or it''s impossible.
[I''m also sick of games with no logic, like Diablo, and with no scenario and freedom like Baldur''s gate]
[The worste about BG, is that even if you''re chaotic evil, you MUST save the village, ~{||~@^\{"-uà_é"'' ! ]
-* So many things to do, so little time to spend. *-

I like criticism only if it is constructive. Abuse is NOT constructive criticism. I must apologise though, because the links appear to be down . I am not sure why it doesn''t like the download, but if you have the address in the title bar and try again it actually works. I will endevour to find out what the problem is. I suggest that you go with the HTML framed versions (Voodoo4''s, or Nazrix''s - though I am not sure the last time he updated them ). To get to these you need to go here
As for bleeding? I merely say that you could add it in as a bit of candy, so that it has not real effect (one solution). The other solution is to diverge from any kind of fighting. It would be very interesting if you could have lots of beings and races that you could meet, though instead of hostility they treat you with curiosity. Instead, the hostile ones are the human bandits on the roads to and from your destinations. It would be a much enlightened change, seeing as it is the humans who are usually the hostile species on this planet
It is good to see we are still getting somewhere

OK- Constructive Criticism. . .tell me if this counts
I''ve noticed alot of places in the .doc where you meant to say a certain thing, but your word order etc. changed the meaning completely (after-effects of typing drunk at 2am, mayhaps? )
Would you appreciate a small donation of time to look it over for these & proofread? In most cases, you can still tell exactly what you were trying to say, but the way I see it is that this doc will probably be one of those "classics", possibly on par w/ I Have No Words & Must Design and if so, why not spend the hour or so to polish it, eh?
BTW(1)- Has anyone submitted this to the GDNet developer resources yet?
BTW(2)- The Word 97 version''s looking nice! All you have to do to download it (until the links fixed anyway) in IE is right-click the link and select "Save Target As" from the context menu. I knew those tricks I learned in high school from searching for free porn would pay off one day!
If you see the Buddha on the road, Kill Him. -apocryphal

And my constructive criticism for paulkp is to. . .
Check the threads this .doc is based on + the doc itself for examples of how these suggestions could really improve gameplay.
(what''d you think I was going to say? )

Thanks AP., the criticism was constructive. No - I haven''t been drinking at all, so that is not the problem, though I believe on some occassions that it was closer to 4am that I was writing it.
I am going to have to go through each of them and put in the links to the specific thread that raised the topic.
I don''t know why IE is being such a bitch, I am now going to have to check with Communicator, but I believe that it is something to do with crosswinds
Word97 is looking OK, but I still need to do things on it, I am trying to get some pictures together, though I haven''t had much time of late. In the holidays I am likely to have an abundance of such time

Hello again. Sorry if my style of writing is aggressive and flaming. Can''t help myself
Anyway, I''ve read this thread and it was nothing exciting. I have developed a rogue-like RPG about 5 years now and I know pretty much about these things. In fact I have not only -thought- about what would work in gameplay, I''ve actually done it to see if it works.

Well if you already know these things Paul, why don''t you share? That''s what the forums are for.
Just saying "I already knew all of this" isn''t of much help to anyone else here, is it?
People might not remember what you said, or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
