Fight Club™ - the game
April 24, 2003 10:20 AM
I''ve been thinking about a beat-em-up inspired by the movie "Fight Club".
In short:
- Ultra-realistic fighting game. People bleed, break fingers and bones, get scared.
- Start with a weak character (Ed Norton... ;-) ). Poor strength and poor skills, the guy is just jabbing.
- Dirty basement locations. Interact with environment as in Dead or Alive 3.
Your thoughts on the concept?
Any similar games?
Tom.
Yeah, I have a thought:
Have you ever programmed anything?

"No. It looks like you barfed up a dictionary in a vain attempt to sound intelligent."

Yes. I''ve worked as game developer and system architect. What''s your point?
Tom.

Does it include stealing fat from a lypo-suction clinic and becoming a space-monkey for Project Mayhem and dropping the Parker Morris Building on the bank next door?

Acutally it sounds like a.. interesting idea but there are games out there that have the "build up your stats as a fighter" Street Fighter games. I''m not even sure if many of them even made it to America. Off the top of my head I recall a game where you started off as a Fast Food worker trying to advance in the fighting world. It was very tounge in cheek.
Came out for the Turbo Graphix. Someone help me out with this. ^_^ it was a long time ago. Had a spin off Anime which was.. pretty damn bad. But what fighting game based movies aren''t?
But I find fighting games fall into 2 catagories. Attempts at stratagy (Dragonball GT:Final Bout anyone? Dragonball Z (The game for the PS2) Was the fighting game good? Or did it just sell because of the name attached. Time to research my good boy. Time to research.
When you think of fighting games you think of Street Fighter, Tekken, King of Fighters, NightStalkers, Mortal Kombat, SoulCalbur.... So on.. Some stragegy but very fast and furrious.. and that appeals to a certian demographic that hard core stragegy fans may not belong to. But then again take the Dynasty Warriors library. A near perfect "can be a well thought out game as well as a kill everything that moves game" It''s all about ballance and what you want.
There''s Soul Calibur''s mission quest and Soul Edge''s Mission quests.. Branching missions.. and not the standard linear "now you fight over buffed guy X! Bwaah haaa ha!" .. I don''t know
but before you even THINK of putting pen to paper on making a fighting game. Go out there. Play OLDER fighting games. Not just the industry staples of Capcom and SNK games.. Go out there and see the smaller groups. Play the bad games and see where they went wrong. Because there''s only one fist full of good ballanced fighting games out there.. and a swimming pool of bad ones.
If you need any help, I''ve been playing fighting games my whole life and I''ve been doing the whole freelance game developing thing. So far it''s been so good with being realisitic with what we''d like to do and what a programer CAN do.. (which is a big deal when your even in just the concept stage)
Turning the DEPTH of Fight Club (My favorite book.. Yes I''m female.. again I say my parents are "so proud") into a game that''s.. an incredible.. huge.. task that is set to either be a cult game or a horrendous nuke bomb in the pants.

HappyGoth, thanks for a great posting! I had almost abandoned this forum.
The movie Fight Club (haven''t read the book) is an exciting experience on many levels. My concept (as of now) would never make that justice, and it probably wouldn''t being a good idea putting the Fight Club brand on it as it would confuse/disappoint the people that saw the film.
My idea - so far - is strictly on having a fighting game with "real people". I''m tired of playing an 8 ft monster hurling people through brick walls. I''ve been boxing for real for a few years and I''d enjoy a game that would communicate the thrill, excitement, and pain of being in a fight.
I''ll check out the games you suggested. Thanks again.
Tom.
