What do you need to know to be a level designer?
Anything specific, and are there any other sites that give some more information about it?
Honor doesn''t mean a thing to thieves!
Well, a mapper needs to know how to build maps obviously. The maps need to be nice, balanced etcetc...
Usually you''re expected to have experience doing Q3 or UT maps. Whoever can do maps for those games should then be able to learn the inhouse level editor easily.

You can''t just say your a map designer because you can use a mapper. I can draw a sphere in Cinema4D, but that dosn''t make me a 3D artist.
You need to know the principles of map design, balance, etc. You also need to know the games AI routines, as the maps will have to be optimised for them to navigate them properly. A knowledge of architecural structure is also good for creating realistic maps.
There''s a lot more to this than putting doors in walls and applying textures.
If at first you don''t succeed, call it version 1.0

The capability to give the people in charge what they wanted. Mostly, it''s a communication issue. Rough it, prototype it, work it with the engine as soon as possible.
Practice and practice and more practice. Play games and look at the levels.
Archetecture helps. Even cinematography helps. Know what you are trying to make. Is it multiplayer? Will there be an ambush?
Dig into it, and make lots of comments on my similar thread. = )
