Hey Guys, Quick question for the artists which is better and easier to use and learn for a non artist... Maya 3D or 3D Studio Max... my college has both softwares, and i wanted to learn one, so i can make art and some movies for some games that i want to and hopefully create.. but which is better and easier... i cant draw... so i need something that is easy to use...
If you can''t draw, spend your time learning that. You will never be a good 3D artist until you have mastered 2D.

Many people think Maya has extremely good modeling tools. I myself prefer 3DS MAX''s subdivision modelling tools; but that''s mainly because I have experience using them.

Don''t listen to me. I''ve had too much coffee.

Try them both, and see which one you like better!

If required (in your case I''m not sure, since your school has them both?), download the basic versions of each..Maya Personal Learning Edition and GMAX. Use one for a week, then use the other. These days it really just comes down to a personal choice based on which user interface you like better. 3DS Max used to be substantially cheaper but Maya has lowered its price enough that price isn''t really a distinguishing factor anymore.

One thing to note though is that 3DS Max is generally more widely used in the game industry (due to the historically lower prices and the fact that 3DS has been avaialble for PCs for a rather long time while Maya started out as UNIX/Workstation software). Maya tends to be more widely used in the movie/pre-renderered market. However, the concepts you learn in one carry over pretty well to the other..Like I said before, these days its mostly UI differences, both have more features than one person will likely ever use.

thats completely untrue. thats like saying you''ll never be good at
Madden 2003 unless you get good at playing football with your
friends.. sure, the experience could help, but its not necessary.

personally, i cant draw for shit. i''m better than alot of
people, but i''m worse than most
however, i can model things in 3D pretty damn good.
in a 3D editor you can tweak vertices around to your liking,
apply deformations, ect.. best editing tool on a pencil is the
eraser

I believe you misunderstand this community. The fine ladies and gentlemen of www.gamedev.net develop those programs you are so quick to pirate.

Not only is it illegal, but it makes me sick.

Take eldee ''s generous advice and read the forum FAQ.

Go with Maya. I tried both, started on 3D Studio, to Max, once I tried Maya, there is no going back. Maya is the easier of the two to learn.

If you like 3D Studio, might as well go with Softimage XSI, that''s a far better package, but you pay the price though.
Can you save files as .x using Maya? I''m new to 3D modeling but downloaded maya recently.
there are converters out there for it
