Hi, I’m Julio Herrera from Via Dei Vellutini, Italia! I’m a dedicated and flexible developer.
What do you think about prototyping game ideas or mechanics without any art assets?
Context: I am currently working on my first game. I did initial prototyping with basic shapes. When I moved forward and put in assets, I felt like it changed the whole feel of the game and some design choices suddenly didn't make sense anymore while other ideas just suddenly sprung up. Currently I am feeling, that separating the gameplay prototyping from art for too long is probably not a good idea.
Edit for clarification:
Maybe I am using the term 'prototype' too broadly. With prototype I did not mean purely technical prototypes (think: how to / is it possible to spawn enemies in a half circle?), I also meant like a game design prototype (think: should the enemy spawn zones have a half circle shape or a straight line?)
In this example lets say the circle works great with a simple blockout (spheres, cones, cubes, etc...), but looks or feels overwhelming/bad/just not right, with actual characters.
