Lyost's Journal - Lyost discovered his A* pathfinding on a navmesh wasn't working once he switched from run-time generation to loading from an XML file, a defect he traced to ContentSerializer and the SharedResource property. He details the findings with code samples as well as a link to the reference for the solution. In short, a good entry on solving a problem that could actually be useful to someone else in the future. Excellent!

Featured Member Journal Entry

Just Glad to Be Here - rmadsen only has one contract job on his plate, as opposed to more like three, so he takes time to reflect on how successful he's been so far going indie. Summary is he's still looking for that balance between working contracts and working his own project, and shares what he's learned towards achieving that goal so far and cautions others on pitfalls that exist along the way

From The Staff

  • Gaiiden's Scroll - in this entry I showcase a new embeddable object that we recently added to the forums/journals - thanks to the fine folk over at OurBricks it's now possible to upload a 3D model to their site and then allow people to view it in 3D, (pan, zoom, rotate) even with animations, in any forum our journal post or even comment here on the site. Nifty!
    Project Updates

    • Journal of Aardvajk - not really a project per se but Aardvajk announces his new focus on Flash to keep his scope down and work in a new language/environment than what he experiences at the day job. Of course someone commented that Flash is on it's way out. What do you think?
    • Blue stain logo+%20bullet.png - alfith uploads some of his models to OurBricks and embeds them in his journal - check out the nifty 3D viewing!
    • SuperMaximo93's game development - SuperMaximo93 gives us a look at Station 6's level editor, which is actually him co-opting the Flash environment to develop levels in and then export them for his game. He details the procedure and includes the references he used to get the idea for developing game levels with the Flash editor
    • kseh's blog - kseh fools around a bit with JTippet's Accidental Noise library to generate some islands
    • Milcho's Journal - Milcho updates on his Procedural Editable Terrain project with some videos showcasing the water effects he's added as well as giving the pros and cons of the various methods for rendering the water that he considered using
      Game Dev Stuffs

      • New Old Things - Endurion's Commodore 64 game development tutorials continues to endure (yes, thank you I'll be here all night) with the latest step taking some time to pause from adding new things and fixing a couple issues that have arisen with what's already been implemented. Bug stomping time!
      • The Code Zone Bargain Basement Blog - johnhattan digs up another old pitch he submitted for an indie project that didn't get approved as posts it up in full so you can see how not to go about writing a pitch. Consider though that he did not receive feedback on this pitch so it's up in the air exactly what's wrong with it. Still, he decided to work of a version of the project on his own and has it available as well.
      • et1337 makes games logo+%20bullet.png - et1337 explains how content is the true heart and soul of your game and how you need tools to help you author said content - usually in a manner better than you could if you rolled all your own tech. Also an updated video of his project
