Here are your Journal Land entries from the period of 10/21 - 10/28

Featured GDNet+ logo+%20bullet.png Journal Entry

OddGames development journal - O-san realizes just how much data he's passing to his graphics card to render his 2D character - turns out it's quite a lot! Morale of his story: If you're working on a 2D game don't get all complacent about your memory bandwidth just because it's 2D. Check his journal for details on the problem (lots of character/equipment animations) and the solution he's currently using.

Featured Member Journal Entry

Necron00bicon - jjd has found a nice tutorial that explains vim text objects for anyone looking to expand their skills with the Linux-based text editor that so many people are coming to know and love (seriously, I've seen a lot of dev friends on twitter raving about this lately)

Welcome, all ye new Journal Land scribes: Subliminalman, Silviu Andrei, alnite, Valvatorezj, FLeBlanc, FlyingSpork, meh.team, Slaton, and alexjc logo+%20bullet.png !

From the Staff

  • GameDev.net Staff Journal - site Executive Producer Drew Sikora explains how we're looking to improve the journal system with the next site iteration to make it more of a publishing platform withing GDNet. Did I just refer to myself in the 3rd person? Yes, yes I did.
    Project Updates

    • Walking Towards The Sun - freeworld has a short new video of his Araknoid clone Zolonoid
    • Once a Bird - Demosthenes talks what's new and what's fixed in the latest build of Graveyard Shift and has a new video showcasing the new Fever Ray weapon
    • INSERT COIN(S) HERE logo+%20bullet.png - Zethariel has a video of his project, which has you controlling an Asteroids ship-like object that vectors around the screen to "collect" all the other visible objects bouncing around. Starting simple is the way to go!
    • Robot University -- a 2D DirectX Puzzle logo+%20bullet.png - puz has a new v1.05 of his Android game for anyone with a Droid that wants to check it out
    • Ashnor's dev journal - ashdev admits he's having DD trouble in charting out all the possible interactions of one of his game mechanics. Anyone think he should be taking a bit more abstract higher-level approach to the initial design? Or a slimmed-down version that's quicker to build and test?
    • SteelGolem's Journal logo+%20bullet.png - SteelGolem has a new developer diary showcasing various updates and additions to his project, which was inspired by Minecraft and Terraria
      Game Dev Stuffs

      • New Old Things - Endurion admits the levels are a bit sparse in his Commodore 64 game so the next step addresses this issue
      • Lyost's Journal logo+%20bullet.png - keep an eye on what Lyost is posting, as he is documenting the various problems he's encountering while developing his XNA tank game and the solutions he is finding to them. Who knows, some may apply to you as well!
      • Any Colour You Like logo+%20bullet.png - benryves has had a busy year, but he's taken a moment to update his journal with Lua source for a game he made for the Zen X-Fi 2 digital audio player. You can use a development kit to try it out if you don't own a X-F1 2, which benryves admits is probably everynody
        Other Stuffs

        • Wavesonics Pseudo-Random Journal Generator logo+%20bullet.png - with his Arduino project still on hold, Wavesonics decided to keep himself busy by building his own breathalyzer
        • A non-programmer's programs - szecs has also been keeping himself busy with side projects, this one a LEGO jeep he designed and constructed himself that features "a 2 speed gearbox, real differentials with a central differential and differential lock, working V6 piston engine and live axle suspension"! Very cool, makes me almost want to drag my bin of LEGOs out of the closet myself...
Thanks for stopping by JTippetts, __Homer__
