Quick thought on playing possum
I remember Unreal Tournament had this ability, but I''m not sure how many used it.
In a single and multiplayer game, is there any point to the ability to play dead? Strategically speaking, if you were up against opponents that could fake death, wouldn''t you simply expend ordinance just to make sure they were dead? And wouldn''t this, unless you forgot, be tedious and just a tactical hassle?
The only way I could see this working would be if ordinance was really expensive to expend. For example, if players were in starships firing expensive torpedoes at one antoher, a player *might* chance saving some dough.
Maybe another way would be if the game was really fast paced and frenetic, and you might just *forget* to put another slug into your foe.
Otherwise, it sounds like a useless option. Agree or disagree?

If you have played Team Fortress Classic for Half-Life, you know that the Spy can feign death. This hardly ever works when somebody is already shooting at you, because they expect it.
However, spies can also disguise themselves as another class. The "big technique" is to disguise as another class, sneak into the enemy base, feign death, and then when somebody walks by, you can jump up and knife them in the back.
Basically, feigning death is often most useful if you just use it to play like a corpse. Then, people don''t expect you to jump up and shoot them. Also, any corpses that players come across need to be shot in order for them to be sure that they are not actally players who are simply feigning death.
I enjoy feigning death.. I think it''s a fun idea.

I tend to agree, playing dead on fighting games like sf2, or tekken would be a waste. But on a stragery game like, dune 2000, or star trek battles, I could see that, but the playing dead should also stay in effect for awhile, not to just bonuce back at any moments notice, to balance out, Once the ai or opponent finds out the person is dead(siike!!), when the player decides to fight or something to that effect wham! the first attack should hit hard, and surprise the opponent for a few mintues...
In the little UT / Q3 I''ve played, i don''t think a feature like this would get used. It is too easy to load up on a lot of ammo and rush in hard through the front door. Points are given to the players who kill, die and rush out to kill again.
It might be useful as a "burrow/Cloak" alternative in a starcraft type game. Take a group of marines out to your front door. "Kill" them. The enemy will just walk by the bodies at the front gate and come to attack and your troops can awake and pin them in.

The only single player game with "play dead" that I know of is some submarine simulations. You can release oil and debris, which float to the surface and make surface ships think you have been broken up by depth charges.

I play UT quit a bit (CTF online). I don''t use the fake death too often but it does come in real handy sometimes.
I have used it to hide in a know fortified place in the enemies fortress and waited for their flag carrier to show up. When his back is turned, boom, I get him. works a good 80% of the time if you don''t do a lot. Of course it helps if you throw a weapon before you fake since when you die in UT you automatically drop your gun.
Also, I use it if I HAVE to wait for the health pack to respawn since I am down to 1 health. Only problem there is random shrapnel, shoots, etc.
So at least in the games where killing everything isn''t the whole game (like Capture the Flag), playing dead can work sometimes as a good strategy if its not overused.
But I don''t think it will be overused too often since if ever one started shooting every corpse they came across, you would be a sitting duck. In UT there is about a 2 second delay where you are getting up and can''t do anything else, which includes moving, shooting, etc.
