What would you all consider a good animation rate for a game? one that looks smooth yet doesn''t require an amazing amount of artwork? thanks

well I heard somewhere (so take this with a grain of salt...) that movies (films) run at 32 fps and videos / TV run at 28 fps - so these rates are acceptable - but note that these also inheirently have motion blur, etc. So unless your simulating motion blur or whatever, you may want a higher rate - but you can probably get by with an even lower rate - but once you reach the refresh rate of the screen (now 60 to 80 Hz I believe) whats the point?? hope this helps a little...
The human eye runs at a refresh rate of about 25-30 Hz. Some people are more sensitive than that. In order to seem perfectly seamless to the human eye, therefore you need a frequency of about 50-60 Hz. Anything below 24 Hz will be perceived as choppy to everyone, unless you do special filtering on the images such as motion blur. For cut-scene animations we try for 30 frames per second. For sprite animations we try for 15 frames per second on most sprites. Considering that most sprite animations take about half a second this isn''t too bad.
Hiya,

Movies (cinema) have a frame rate of 24 fps, but as has been said, they have the benefit of motion blur. Without it, one needs a much higher frame rate to fool the brain.

You can''t really compare CG animation updates with film or tv updates. CG usually uses about half the speed as tv. I think Diablo uses 15. So I suggest you try something like that, or test your way to the optimal frame rate.
