Great Monsters Of Our Times
The really creepy "footsteps" that followed you around in Infocoms "Lurking Horror"...a old school text adventure

Pretty much all the monsters in Realms of the Haunting scared the hell out of me, much as Doom''s Cyberdemon did the first time I dealt with it. The thing about RotH''s monsters was not so much how scary they were, it was the conditions in which they were introduced. One would just pop out of the floor right in front of you when you thought you were walking down an empty corridor. But it didn''t happen often enough to stop getting scary So perhaps it''s worth bearing in mind that the context of the monster is as important as the monster itself.
Pokemon scares the hell out of me! almoust pissed my pants when i found out how bad it was yet so popular!
...as for other things, final fantasy 3 had some really cool badies

For me it wasnt "the monster" as much as it was the anticipation or suspense of the monster arriving. I think a lot of the older games (pre-svga) did a much better job with story lines because they didnt have the flashy graphics and had to work harder to keep the player interested. So I guess the best monsters in my opinion were well thought out with some sort of purpose. Oh and I know they are old(black and white) but if you want a good example of suspense take a look at some old Alfred Hitchcock shows.

The first time I saw a shambler in Quake, I was like ''HOLY F*CK'', turned and ran

Reaper_X, the alien you're thinking of is the Chrysalid. It scared me too, and made Gamespot's top ten scariest monsters of all time. Definitely a freaky one, when you heard it's yell and footsteps you pissed your pants in fear that this guy could be anywhere on the board and still get to practically anyone of your guys. And if I could take that many hot plasma blasts to the face, I wouldn't be writing computer games!
And what about the grue from the Zork series? You never saw 'em but i'll be damned if I ever played that game in the dark.

Aside from the big boss in Half-Life, I would have to say that the stupid little things that jumped at you and the things that looked like a rope and pulled you up if you got attached to it. They weren''t hard, but they did scare me the first time I ran into them.
Also, those zombies in Thief. Basically, everything in that game made me startled, but those damn zombies.. I remember jumping back and falling out of my chair after seeing it come for me. And they wouldn''t die!!!

i loved all the monsters in doom, the cyberdemon make me wanna turn and run, but the one that tops em all is the fiend in quake.
i still remember that first time i stepped on that one switch, two blocks pop out and go into the wall, a door opens, and one jumps out and tears you to bits
i think they had to pry me outta the computer chair after that one

Walking through the desert in ''Quest for Glory 2'' was kinda boring , but i can remember the tension and that i always began to tremble when the game stopped and my old 286 started to load -and then some bad guy appeared on the screen: a giant scorpion, a dinosaur or a desert raider...
SimAnt''s spider was scary too.
Oh, and I won''t forget the alien guards in ''Out of this World'', this game had a great atmosphere.

I like the monsters from quake 1!
They looked extremely good at that time and
they were really different to each other.
And they scared me sometimes, too
And at least they were better designed
( not in the technical sense ) than the
monsters in the following quake games.
