I've known, and have known for years, the difference between Arab (ethnicity from one part of the middle east - as opposed to, for example, Turkish, or Iranian) and Muslim, and so don't mix the two. But what's the difference between Islamist and Muslim?

Islamism (political islam) is a group of political ideologies based on islam, an islamist is a person who subscribes to one such ideology, extreme islamism is what drives organisations such as isis, Iran is somewhere in the middle (islam stands above the democratically elected officials) and on the reasonable end you have islams equivalent of european christian democracy or pretty much any right wing US politician.

A follower of Islam is an Islamist.

This above is nothing more than your fear of foreigners and I'm willing to bet your fear extends far beyond just Muslims. He has called westernized Muslims "uncle toms" in the past and has shared speaking platforms with pro ISIS speakers. While I will give the guy the benefit of the doubt he has changed since he was obviously able to convince London to elect him (but Europe does seem to be intent on cucking itself so maybe not). Past behavior hasn't done anything to disprove the stereotype.

Look at American history, Americans are always scared of the group they are at war with and that fear lasts years after the war ends. Fear is a natural reaction to attacks. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Japanese Americans were put in internment camps out of fear they were Japanese spies. German Americans were thought to be Nazi spies or former Nazis in hiding. Russian Americans were thought to be undercover KGB during the Cold War. Throughout documented history there are stories and accounts of people being suspicious of other people as being spies for the group the US was at war or in conflict with. Terrorist are attacking the US (as well as other countries) and the ones taking credit for it are identified as Islam extremists which unfortunately makes people weary and suspect anyone practicing Islam to be possible terrorists (sleeper cells) or spies for them to coordinate an attack. Every attack just builds that fear and paranoia, 9/11, Boston Marathon bombing, San Bernardino Shooting, etc. If history is an indicator, wait a few decades and a new group will come out of the woodwork for the US to fear and Islamaphobia will be a distant memory.
