What? No, of course not!

I knew nothing about programming before I went for my apprenticeship. I didn't understood OO Programming until my final exams with 21.

Still I am working as a professional programmer today.

I know some older guys that have learned programming when they were way over 40.

The guy that was mocking you was just full of it. And was making fun of you just to make you feel bad.

Don't listen to him. Learn programming in your own time. Take as long as you need to. You are still pretty young and way before most others.

I started programming at 35 :P

Granted, I'm still super new to many things, but I think as long as you still have a brain and a desire to learn you're not too old :)

(Though posts like these are starting to make me feel frickin' ancient).

Beginner here <- please take any opinions with grain of salt

Seriously, where did this weird ageist meme come from?

I think people see the rare exceptions who have done super things by the time they were 18 and think 'oh, it is too late for me' because of that - its a fun human thing to compare ourselves to others and then get depressed/unhappy when we don't feel like we measure up.

I learned more about computer science in 2 years of university than I ever did during my years in middle school (see how I just dropped that age reference in there? I promise not to be a jerk about it).

Agreed. I started very, very young. I didn't have anyone to teach me though and for years the only language I had access to was BASIC, so when I finally did start to learn how to program properly, I had a lot of bad habits to unlearn.

I'm 33 years old myself and I literally spent 1 year learning java with an epic amount of laziness involved.

Relax, you're go for launch! biggrin.png

I started when I was 25.. Studied for 3 1/2 years and have now worked for Cisco for 4 years.

Its never too late. Never let anyone push you down like that. Its just them showing their insecurities. Don't let it affect you. If programming is a passion for you you'll get good at it, just give it time :)

Nothing is to late to learn and it is something that we would be doing in our lifetime. But simply to answer your question, there is no age limit onto when to learn programming; just need to have motivation and determination in achieving it. That is essential thing of a programmer, is that they never set a ground rules and limits in when to stop programming as they would build more and more onto it. Python is a great choice for beginners, as it has a simple syntax and it helps you to get going. My tip is, always run your program! No matter how silly your program looks, always run it and see if is going to compile correct; one of the skills you want to pickup when you programming is the ability to debug your own codes.

I learned C++ within the last 2 years and I'm 37.

(granted, I learnt C64 BASIC at 9 & 6502 assembler at 12 so maybe I had an unfair advantage)
