Yeah man, where are they? Don't tell me you misplaced them again. I told you not to stuff ancestor spirits where they don't belong.

Lets talk about black boxes.

Theyr sole purpose is make things conclude as human error. As otherwise the companies would be ruined after each accident...that always happens...probably by a bird in turbine, lightning..or really crappy plane maintenance...but hey, its human error, it always is...Of course, the content of black boxes arent expose for the public immediatly (if ever) for some really good reason..

Ppl never realize that if theres money involved, who the fuck cares about human lives.. >_> wheres my tin foil

Sure, this place is not as interesting/political/strifey as it was five years ago, for example, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think the signal to noise ratio has improved since I started following the site around 2005.

The thing is, at some point the site needed to make a choice. Was it going to be a professional community with the common tie of game development, or was it going to be the gamedev version of 4chan with all the associated juvenile bullshit? I, personally, think they made the right choice. Other opinions differ.

Yeah. I was always a bit on the other side of that choice, though not at the 4-chan extreme. I think of the choice that was made as more like, "professional vs. popular", with the decision being made in favor of professional (like the bland blue and white colorscheme that is pretty much internet standard for professional sites) and against popular (the possibility of adding discussion forums about _playing_ games, which is kind of the "embarrassing hick family background" of game design). I don't think the site succeeded 100% at becoming professional though, people still seem to take GamaSutra (for example) more seriously than us. We never got working any of the various plans intended to help specific indie teams get a game finished and published, or the plans to create a pipeline to funnel experienced indies and paying full-time jobs to each other. So I see GameDev as some place that has been stuck in limbo for the past 2 or 3 years, though I was very happy with the crossbones stuff and the push to encourage people to write articles.

I should probably blame myself as much as anyone else though. If I had the drive and creativity to put some kind of discussion-inspiring content in the writing forum every week I'd almost certainly have more posters there, saying more creative things.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

you are important enough for use to spend scarce and expensive time and resources on

I always love this. It acts as if everything someone does is driven towards a goal. Like every min of ones life is always doing something productive. This is the Lounge after all.

Eh. Even if we limit it to our entertainment and leisure time, *this* thread is still competing with *that* thread -- not to mention other forums, websites, TV shows, friends, etc. Time is the most precious resource we have -- Its near impossible to buy or trade for even a little of it back, even for the relatively wealthy (really, you can only outsource your own mundane chores, provided you can afford to do so). Mental and physical energy is a not-so-distant second -- again, if you're relatively wealthy you can outsource some of that too.

Not all our time is directed at a purpose (too often, it isn't) but nevertheless, how we choose to spend it has myriad competition.

"Boring people get bored easily," is an old saying that I treasure.

There is much to do and much of interest for the person who sees both the obvious and the unobvious value in circumstances. Especially digging to discover the unobvious value of things is a real stimulation for me - better than drugs.

Personal life and your private thoughts always effect your career. Research is the intellectual backbone of game development and the first order. Version Control is crucial for full management of applications and software. The better the workflow pipeline, then the greater the potential output for a quality game. Completing projects is the last but finest order.

The forums being boring or interesting is certainly a subjective thing. However it does seem to me that activity in the lounge and most other forums is pretty low the past while. It could just be that threads aren't interesting me lately but it sortta feels like most forums have only like three or four threads just sort of lingering. Exception being the Beginners forum.
