Baldur's Gate Engine?

I think the whole screen is one big prerendered image and they store clipping information separately in polygonal form. They then clip the characters to the polygons. LaMothe makes mention of this technique in his Windows Game Programming Gurus book. He doesn''t specifically mention Baldur''s Gate, but the technique he describes would fit the game. Check his book out. It''s pretty good.
