I think jwalker meant to saw "Outlaws," instead of Full Throttle. That is the other LucasArts game set in the Old West.
Some interesting stories related to Cerro Gordo. The first website explains that P. A. Chalfant (presumably the Chalfant that has some aeras named after him near Bishop, California) described Cerro Gordo as a shooting gallery. The other website has some other information. It might lead you to believe that Cerro Gordo was near Los Angelese, but it was over 200 miles away.

Anyway, it is an appreciation of this type of history and a desire to get intimate with it that would really help you to create a better wild west RPG. Knowledge of the little details, the anecdotal stories, how the mines worked, and what life was like can go a long way to making a game better.

There is a lot more information on Cerro Gordo on the Web if one is inclined to chase after it.
