Are some guns used to kill children(most disgusting thing I can think of)? Probably yes. Are some guns used to protect children? Also probably yes. Same principle of the Force can be applied with the teaching of Christianity, teaching is not bad nor good, it is how it is used. To us Christians really doesn't matter if proof of god exist, it is the faith that make us Christians. And another thing, how can you prove something beyond your comprehension?
I find it odd how ready people are to accept Christian extremists who are quite certainly not-Christian as being representative of the Christian faith as a whole, but when an extremist from another faith commits genocide they are the exception not the rule.

Extremism is only a problem if the core teachings of the religion are problematic. If I'm an extremist for a completely non-violent, non-judgemental religion, then the more extreme I am the less you have to worry! I saw a video lately featuring part of a Sam Harris lecture talking about Islamic extremism, and he put it brilliantly "There is nothing wrong with religious fundamentalism if your religion is non-violent. The only trouble with Islamic fundamentalism... are the fundamentals of Islam".
The same can be said of Christianity and some other religions. The more 'fundamental' you get, the more judgemental and ignorant you become. The moderates look down on them as much as the rest of us, and fine, but we must remember: if all the stuff the extremsists say weren't in the Bible/Qur'an/whatever to begin with, it wouldn't be a problem! If instead of "do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman that is detestable" the Bible said "buy all your gay friends a puppy", the worst thing Christian fundamentalists would do to homosexuals is cause their allergies to flare up.
