A new kind of RPG?
floating iceburg... that''s a good idea! annon, i''m not making the game for linux and i''m not targeting them either... do games have to have a target audience? i just wanna make the game, and worry about that stuff later. the only problem is that i''m just learning directx programming, so i probably won''t be done for a while

I love the plot! Hey, maybe the artic creatures wanted to get a nice tan but they couldn''t afford transportation to Hawaii and destroying the ice caps (and thus the world) would be cheaper.
BTW, another game with an EXCELLENT hilarious plot is Day of the Tentacle. Anyone remember that?

Cool concept.
With an idea like this, you really dont need to worry about holes in your plot. The whole thing is based off wacky fantasy anyway, and people arent going to have an aneurysm if something doesnt quite mesh (why the hell was mario throwing mushrooms at an egg and fire spitting pink dino?). No-one will care.
What you do need to do is figure out exactly what the gameplay is going to be. Youve given a rough overview, but how will those elements work together? Youve mentioned magic, team, stealth, counter strike all in one sentence with no comment about how you are going to mesh these into a single game.
The idea with these kinds of games is to keep the interface as simple as possible. The fantasy story youve concocted is cool, and it could appeal to markets older than 8-10. What you need to do now is pull a minor miracle out of your hat and come up with gameplay that is appealing to younger markets as well as older markets. Look at Mario, Sonic, Crash etc etc for inspiration. heck, even look at Donkey Kong. These are all cool games with a fantasy element that appeal to wide audiences.
Good luck. Making this kind of game takes a _lot_ of forethought and planning to make it sweet.

thanx for the enthusiasm all!! i might die trying (ok maybe not ) but im gonna work on this game non-stop for the rest of the summer. i''m currently reading tricks of the windows game programming gurus... does this book have enough info about tile/isometric rpg''s to make one, or should i buy another book? also, is there any websites entirely devoted to directx rpg programming?

The design people probably arent the best people to ask about programming stuff. I''m sure many here program but most focus only on design itself. Anyways, I was thinking I know you want to keep this simple to start out. But you might want to have little cut scenes and such between major parts of the story. Its a great way to add background and dialogue, plus it''s a great way to put a little humor into it without having to interupt what will hopefully be some decently intense gameplay.
Yah, I like the idea too. So as the mag. glass has to be round, you can use the polar bear''s butt shape... That''s cool

That''s a funny plot, i would play that game! There''s a book all about isometric programming in that prima tech andrew lamothe series, haven''t read it though so i couldnt tell you whether it''s good or not.

Or just a giant structure resembling a polar bear holding a m.glass :p
Did anyone here ever play Little Big Adventure 2? The ending was pretty funny, with that volcanoe, statue, and (off course) your nemesis

You should make it bloody as hell and a side view, i have tricks of the windows game programming gurus to and it has really horrible info on isometric stuff, soo i think you should make a side view type game where you can go to towns and suff where you can buy guns and penguin buddys - and if you wanted to make it really cool - you should make it so you can do almost anything in the town and get kicked out if you want (but thats not a problem because you have a map of where you can go to - maybe like a mario kind of map). To do the sneaking around thing maybe he could have a cloak spell which makes him hidden (and his buddys). Damn that would be a great game... i dont know about you but i would play it. I would luv to help u with the game u wanted it... but im already working on a project :-(. But i would be happy to help you program if you ever needed it. (I dont know DX but i could probably help you if you ever want to put in some fancy 2d effects stuff like fake shadowing)
MaNiAK - even though the game is gonna be crazy, im not sure if i wanna make it _that_ insane
TechnoHydra - cutscenes wud be good, but i want to have a lot of the plot revealed in the actual gameplay too
im gonna make a website for the game soon... also, i''m interested in any ideas for the game you have, so email anything and everything to KaMiKaZ04@hotmail.com
