Another interesting choice is the new 22'' E-IPS panel from Dell. It sells for something close to $250 and should be much better than TN monitors of the same price. Initial reports are looking good, however it's only 1680x1050 compared to HP's 1920x1200.
Street price is actually $200 and a bit; I have one in front of me and an older TN sitting next to it. The TN's colors are noticeably bogus compared to the e-IPS in the Dell. The model is 2209WA, and it's a dead on match for sRGB -- but no wider. It won't do the bigger color gamuts, but I think very few people really want a gamut wider than sRGB.

Still, if yuou are willing to accept 22" at 1680x1050 for a somewhat higher than normal price tag, the Dell 2209WA does have the e-IPS panel and it is fantastic.

Out of curiosity, have you had any problems with the DPI of the 2209WA? At its native resolution it has about 90 DPI, which is rather low. Several 22'' 1680x1050 monitors I've seen have rather mediocre text due to this (visible color fringing).

I am seriously considering getting 2x of those monitors - or was, because Dell decided to retire this model early (it's only been selling for 4-5 months!) I guess they were testing the waters to see customer response. Back to the drawing board, again...

Rumors have it that LG will introduce their own e-IPS models in Europe. Judging from the specs, they seem to be using the same panels as the 2209WA (AFAIK, Dell bought their e-IPS panels from LG, so it makes sense). Price and actual performance

The Dell's DPI is a bit on the low side, so things are slightly bigger than you'd expect -- but I haven't noticed any problems with text display or anything. I'm running Vista ClearType, and I did run the tuner as well as doing a full calibration pass. The effects you're describing are frequently due to the Sharpness setting being too high, though.

I heard the LG was hitting a much higher price point, $400-$500, but I can't confirm that.

pity theyve phased on 4:3 monitors
I have a dell 20'' 1600x1200 i.e. ~9% more pixels than the 'widescreen' 22''
