favourite rts of all time?
Why the lack of love for Starcraft? Only one person has mentioned it so far. :(
if you liked Age of Empires 2
try settlers 2or3, though a bit more micromanaged than aoe2
though arguably its graphics were worse than settlers 3 (from 1998) AOR2 was from 1999

Quote: 1. Age of Empires II: fantastic setting, well balanced, deep & varied, with better 2D graphics than any 3D game at the time

AOE 2 and 3 are my personal favorites, honorable mention to rise of nations.
There was a saying we had in college: Those who walk into the engineering building are never quite the same when they walk out.
Settlers 4.
More focus on economy than battles. The main downfalls were desync problems and engine instabilities, as well as far too simple AI players. There were also some problems with building placements due to different things. One problem was that you would suffer from placing two buildings of the same kind too far from eachother, and the other problem was autogenerated roads which had problems farms and forrester huts.
The main concern was the player AI though, waaay too easy. Just survive their first attack and you won't face any problems ever again.
Europa universalis 3 is another great game, but I'm not sure it qualifies as an RTS. It is to the RTS genre what baldurs gate or neverwinter nights is to the hack 'n' slash genre I suppose.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
it had a good balance of complexity and accessibility, and the matches never really took hours on end like they had a tendency to do in other games
