And so would anyother kung fu movie. I really think they should make action games (fighting and fps) more like Hong Kong movies (even though Max Payne is supposedly infuenced by John Woo.)Check out John Woo (Better Tommorow, The Killer, Hardboiled), Jet Li (Fist of Legend, Once Upon a Time in China, a million other movies), or anything Kung Fu\Hong Kong for fighting game influences.
What you are talking about to a degree or almost exactly, is Oni. You should check out that game. I havent seen it, but its an FPS (on single player .. no multiplayer ) that when you get close enough to an enemy you can use hand to hand combat. Not sure on the specifics, but when you get in vicinity you can perform fighting manuever like jumping side kicks and other kicks and punches.. and the game uses anime style graphics. I would have gotten this game if I could play it against other players.. thats the downfall for me.

Ive always thought it would be cool if someone implemented Oni style moves into other multiplayer fps''s. Imagine if you get behind or in near range to someone, you could pull a Matrix fly across the room kick and knock the gun out of his hand, and then when you fall near him you could pull another combo move to break is neck or something. That would really make the FPS genre take a new turn, if people could grapple around and knock guns out of hands.

Oh and as far as controllers: Mouse and Keyboard is the best and most efficient way of controlling any 3D game.. end of story. I personally hate game pads. Just put support for mouse and keyboard because most 3d fp gamers use this.. not gamepads. Put Gamepad support if you want, but that is the smaller market.. I guarantee it. Oni was made with mouse and key.

TheEnderBean- He is not talking about a first person game here, I really don''t think mouse and keyboard is going to be suitable.
Gamepads have always been the prefered may to control these type of games.

I think you should see the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Although the fight scenes were extremely unrealistic, they were very cool. It also had a good story and almost no ninjas.

I know that I''m nit-picking and of topic, but I just felt I had to clarify a little

The movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" contains *no* ninjas as it is set in China and ninjas are a Japanese phenomenon.

Wearing black clothes and covering your mouth with a piece of cloth doesn''t make you a ninja
Hey,

This is my opinion on what would make the perfect fighting game control system. (this is for a "closed spaces" type fighting game instead of an "open spaces" type)

I think that the player should have a button for each of their limbs. The left leg, right leg, left arm, right arm, and head.
When the player presses the button it will preform action on the closest "object".

Let us suppose the player is standing next to a wall in this game. He could press up, then kick and he would maybe jump up and kick (left leg) off the wall, ready to air punch (arm) the opponent waiting in the middle of the arena.

Another example would be if the player was close to the opponent, and he pressed right arm. The player''s arm would be "pulled" to a "target spot" on the opponent''s body punching him there.

For figuring out the animation for the player hitting the opponent, you could use a bones system and give each target spot a special animation (or more) for hitting it.

P.S.
I think that fighting as giant robots *cough* Gundam Wing *cough* would be cool!

For all those that tried, and haven''''t gone and died. I salute you.

You said you were thinking of a penalty for being "passive" or inactive... I think it''d be cool if the fights were in some sort of Gladiator type environment, where you can have different types of characters/creatures/whatever fighting each other, possibly even with weapons, in a large "arena". If someone stands still for too long (or anything else undesirable) the crowd could get unruly and throw stuff at the offending character, causing damage and DETERRING anyone from doing that to begin with.

That could also provide a more long-term playing option... you start a character. You could use the typical "win fights--earn money--improve stats" type of formula allowing the players to build their characters over time (and even win the affection of the crowd, giving you sort of a "home court"... the crowd throws more stuff at the other guy).

And would DEFINATELY recommend adding network-gaming. If you''re going to all of the trouble to write this in the first place, just go the extra mile. It could make the above suggestion of allowing for a home-court type situation REALLY fun. If various servers online acted as arenas, players could be very popular with the crowd at some arenas, and little known or unpopular at others. It could turn into a king of the hill type thing where everybody wants to beat the guy that wins a lot and has high approval of the crowd, even if THEY might be that guy at another arena.

I quote him:

"I intend for it to be employing 3D graphics using OpenGL, and I intend to take advantage of the fact that the world is 3D, without detracting from the nature of the game at all. Naturally enough, I''m aiming for a Street Fighter anime sort of feel to the gameplay, though I intend to add some Matrix flair to it, as well as various different things...I look forward to having a lot of fun with camera tricks, putting in lots of lighting and particle effects, etc."

What he is describing here a 3D engine, from either an FP, or 3rd person from behind perspective (ala Tribes). The preferred and most effient way of controlling this environ throughout the community of players who play in the FPS genre is Mouse/Key.. ask anyone. Some people use gamepad, joystick, special ergo controllers.. but those suck and the people that use them suck and will get thier asses kicked by a decent Key/Mouse player any day. This is not an opinion.. its a fact. I will not respond to any other arguments because they are wrong. Except maybe from the person who intends to make this game... and then only if he confirms that this is not gonna be true 3D environ.. and even then Key/Mouse is still probably best. End of Story.
