Its a long story, suffice it to say that a SDL GUI project I was once involved with used them, and when I decided to start my own GUI library, I looked up their origin.

I am not sure, the copyright.txt file reads:

The above copyright and trademark notices and this permission notice
shall be included in all copies of one or more of the Font Software
typefaces.

However the release notes state that the copyright is included in the fonts themselves, so you may not need to add the copyright notice after all.
