Directsound hardware is lost on Vista

I found this notice which is of great interest for anyone into sound in games. It seems Directsound will no longer have hardware support on Vista. Read more about it here

This is not promising especially since creative's openal drivers have been in beta forever!

Yeah, I posted about this on my developer journal a while back. Is OpenAL widely supported? Are there any non-Creative cards that matter?
