hmm...I think there are more interesting books of Stephen King's than The Stand.
I'd suggest It, The Dark Half, or The Shining
The Dark Tower series was good too although I only read the 1st and 3rd of the series.
that is, if you haven't seen the movies...at least I liked them better when I read them 8 or so years ago when I was about 15 yrs old or so. Perhaps, they wouldn't appeal to me as much now.
And I still say that Anne Rice has some of the most beautiful writing there is...although I've only read the Vampire Chronicles.

Well, it's my opinion that The Stand is the definitive King book to read. Sunandshadow, don't listen to him! Actually, everyone I know who has read The Stand , that being one of my sisters and three of my friends, agree this is one helluva an awesome and epic story.
Sunandshadow, you're going to read about the Walkin' Dude. I hope you didn't see the made for TV miniseries.
If I've seen a movie and I haven't read the book, I generally choose not to read the book, because I enjoy the discovery element of reading, as opposed to the inevitable 'compare this to the movie' syndrome one falls into after having seen the movie.

Yes, if you've seen the mini-series, that would really mess things up. The Stand was good, but I think I just get tired of the "90% of the world has been destroyed concept"
S&S, go ahead and read The Stand, but after that forget Bishop's other stuff until you read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles

Well when i create a futuristic world I like to base it on earth and setup the political situation of the world based on the current political situation of earth and what it might turn into.
For example the violence going on in Israel today, I would just imagine what that situation will have evolved into 10 maybe 20 years from now.

no, I haven''t seen the tv miniseries.
DavidRM: no offense taken; you certainly could edit it that way and Strunk and White would encourage you to do so, but why would anyone want to read the result?

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

Strunk and White?
So, sunandshadow, have you ever taken inspiration from this book? I suppose you could say it''s anti Struck and White.
So, today I picked up Delaney''s Dhalgren and Triton. What do you think of that?
How''s The Stand coming along?
