Free Sound Effects?
I'm currently working on my first full game. However, I do not have any sound effects. Does anyone know where I can get some decent (they don't have to be great) FREE sound effects? I just need a few simple ones, like swords clashing, an arrow whizzing by, footsteps, etc. I have seen a lot of sites that have what look like some good ones, but none of them are free. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again, they don't have to be great, since this is my first game.

unfortunately, some of these are directly from commercial games so you don't want to stick with those. But it can find "most" of what you may be looking for, just may take some time to sift through and listen to everything.

Well, since my game will be free, isn't it okay that I use sounds from commercial games?

Not top quality (imho), but works and is freeware/shareware.
For footsteps and water splashes I used my feets, the outside and a digital camera. Depending on the camera (and the wind) I get a decent to almost garbage sound, however I have made it(so it's free) and I get the sound that I want(not a sound that sounds like the one that I want).

ditto with Kenbar here, use them for placeholders, use them for testing but that's pretty much it. Chances are a small freeware game may not get noticed by the owner, but you should really break yourself from that school of thought as soon as possible.

To elaborate on the other answers, you're always violating someone's copyright when you use thier copyright-protected material without permission, regardless of the usage. There is an exception to this called 'fair use', but it doesn't apply in this case, nor in the majority of uses often claiming to be protected by it.
If you're just testing and aren't planning on releasing the material to anyone you'd be fine using copyrighted sounds, but as soon as you release something (even for free) you open yourself to legal action; in many cases you'd probably get away with it because it simply wouldn't be noticed or because some companies don't mind non-profit uses of certain portions of thier intellectual property, but essentially if you don't have explicit permission you're taking a gamble and may recieve a ceace-and-desist or even be taken to court.
With regards to findsounds, it's up to you to check the licencing of anything you find using it, so don't assume anything is free for usage. I'd second the recommendation of Flashkit (linked above by sirGustav) as a source of reasonable quality SFX; again, be sure to check and abide by the licences of any given sound, but they have plenty of freeware, shareware and 'linkware' sounds.
