What''s the best (fast executing, easy to use, close to C syntax) scripting library there? I want to write a game engine, then add a scripting library to it to simplify making my levels, etc. So what''s a good one there (preferably opensource)?

Lua and Small are two languages designed to be embedded in applications. If you're interested in rolling your own, check out Babel for some discussion and links.
