My First Major 3D Model

I've modeled with various other software, but never made anything perticularly special. A couple days ago, I got 3ds Max and started to play around with it. I decided to make a plunge and draw my own little guy (which I was suprised how well that turned out) and used it to make a 3d model, which was WAY easier than I expected. I started this morning and finished recently. Here it is. http://home.comcast.net/~joobot/my_3d.jpg . I still need to fine tune it (his arms are a little wacked) but other than that it was really easy. Tell me, am I talented or is this normal. P.S. I have no idea how to texture it.
I'm a coder, so may not be the best person to ask, but I think it looks really good for a first model! I make simple models for my games and they are usually boxes with textures :).

There are plenty of good tutorials on texturing on the net. It's not that hard once you get your head around it really.

I'm not an artist either, but I think it looks pretty good. The hands look a little large, and as you say the arms are a little weird (though not bad), but overall it's quite good and certainly an excellent start. It's certainly better than my first (and only) humanoid model.

Its average for a first model, congrats. Just keep at it, as for the model, here are my suggestions.

First, the legs are bowed, the neck is short and like you said, the arms are off. Other than that, there is a serious issue with weighting, that crossed thing Im guess is a thing of bullets or something, it needs to hang from his shoulders, not float around them. The torso is extremely small compared to arms and legs, proportions are tough though.

I would suggest at this point to do some nudes, they really help when it comes to learning weighting, proportions and such because you learn why cloth falls like it does.

I know about the proportions. I'm actually shaped that way and kinda modeled it after myself. Thanks for the feedback.
what version of max?

use sub materials and apply them to different areas and then flatten them with
uvw unwrap modifier next render to texture and have a look at the file photoshop

Wow. Besides the aforementioned proportions, that's impressive.

The head, in particular, must have taken some serious time. Very well done.

Pretty good especially for your first model, some of the problems have already been mentioned but I wanted to point out one more the hands look a little odd as if on backwards, that thumb needs tweaking and bringing down outta line with the fingers...

I can tell for a fact you are not shaped that way. Here are some good rules of thumb to help you out:

a persons arm span is almost exactly the same as their height.
from the bottom of the foot to below the their nasal is one half a body length
men are typically 7 to 7.5 heads tall, this includes their actual head

I just noticed his face looks pretty good so good job on that. Everything else looks a bit rushed compared to it. Good luck, keep working.

BTW, what version of max are you using? Did you buy a liscensed version?

Just measured myself. I'm 6'2'' and my arm span is 6'5''. My torso is baout 2/3 the length of my legs. The proportions on the model were a little extrem even in comparrison to that though. I made his body a little bit longer and his arms a little bit shorter. He also has elboes and gloves now now, and a little bit better hands, but they still need work.
