Is this a tile-based game?

Anyone seen the screenshots of the new cowboy strategy/shoot-em-up game, Desperado? If not, check this out: Desperado Screenshots Are those tile-based backgrounds? If so, how many tiles do they use?! If not, any ideas on how they got such detailed scenes? I know there are lots of cool-looking games around nowadays, with thousands of beautifully shaded textured polygons flying around the place, but these are the first screenshots in some time that have really made me think "oooooh... nice"!
I am guessing those are hand drawn and they just load the image onto a surface (or a quad if 3d). Are they using the Bioware Engine (Baldur''s Gate, Planescape: Torment) ?

Development is well under way and we do have a playable demo.
Always looking for help.

I''ve not found any mention of the engine used. Oh well, I was just curious.

I just checked out your site, by the way. The Dominion screenshots look nice. I love 2D space shooters like that. I''m planning on writing something similar myself, although I''ve only just started learning DirectX and am still creating my wrappers. After doing a simple space invaders type game I''d like to write a 2D scrolling Star Wars-based space shooter, using POVRAY-rendered models of X-Wings and Tie-Fighters for the spacecraft. Naturally I''m not considering releasing it and taking on the might of George Lucas''s legal empire!

Good luck with Dominion. I''ll check up on your progress from time to time.

That screenshot reminds me a lot of ''Commandos:Behind enemy lines''.

Oh wait. it is (little character portraits and all)
I loved that game.

I think it''s just a huge bitmap (or very large tiles) - prerendered kind of stuff.
