I know everyone''s given some good ideas, so I''ll digress and tell you how I brainstorm new ideas, because it''s a lot of fun.
I just play games. Old games, new games, whatever, the Console emulators come in handy if you don''t feel like dusting of that old Nintendo. As I play through them, I start to think "this game would be much cooler if I did X". I then build ideas on that, maybe trying another few games to see if I can gather any more information.
If you don''t have access to many video games, try looking at game websites (not game programming websites). Read about games you''d like to play, and see if you get any ideas from that. Of course, keep your expectations realistic. Say you like Spryo the Dragon (I do, I guess I''m silly that way), don''t try to write a 3D platformer when you only know 2D, or have never written a platformer. Write an old style Sonic the Hedgehog platformer (remember those days?)
Well, that''s my $0.02

Sorry to go off topic - but the idea of a movie by Douglas Adams intruiges and excites me
C''est vrai?

I''m going to do a "Spy vs. Spy" remake... is there someone interested in joining me?

Spy vs spy, that game rocked
If you can make it an online-game, I''d play it a LOT.
Spy vs spy was a bit sluggish, though. Same kind of trap making with a bit more speed and I love it.

Have you ever played or seen "A" on a TI-83? It''s a really cool game-pack for a calculator, with some pretty original adaptations of popular atari type games, as well as some of it''s own ''new'' games. Check it out if you can... It''s very fun...

Yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future. Today is a gift, that is why we call it the present.
That game "A" you are talking about is actually a launcher for various other games, but yeah you get a lot of good games on the calculator - and a lot of bad ones....
Personal favourites include PI Intruder, DStar, and of course Tetris....
Yes a Spy vs. Spy game would be very very good and addictive... how would it work though? I played the version on Apple IIe and it wasn''t that good.

If you don''t have an idea of a game YOU want to play, then get then don''t bother making a game at all. Its that simple. Don''t make games just to make games. Make games that YOU want to see and play.
