I''ve read in a few places, and seen somewhere myself, that DirectDraw will make a come-back in Version 9.0

Yeah, I heard about that too. I have no idea why Microsoft would integrate DD into D3D and then bring it back out a version later. Who knows, maybe thare''s some awesome 2D features on the horizon that Microsoft''ll have to seperate 2D again. I found that doubtful but that''s the only thing I can think of. Anyone else hear about this??

DirectDraw will not be coming back as a separate entity. The IDirect3DSurface9 interface will include Blt, BltFast and BltBatch (finally) functions. However, to use DirectX 9, you will need to be using Windows ME or 2000. Why? Microsoft is totally ineffable.

Wait... So this means that learning DirectDraw would be a waste of time? Or should I continue reading TOTWPG and learn DirectDraw before moving on to D3d?

IMHO just make a choice and stick with it. If you''re new to it all, start at DirectX8 and ignore DirectX9 unless you really need it when it comes out; or if you''re familiar with DirectX 7 stick with it unless you need something that DirectX8 only can do....
I''m good at DirectX 7, having been using it since the day it was out.... But I am moving on to 8 I think....

I think I''ll stick with Direct7, tho I haven''t started yet. I have LaMothe''s book to help, and it would be awhile for Direct8 tutorials to match, I think. Stuff I learn with DirectDraw won''t be TOTALLY worthless when I go to D3D, will it?

no, since D3D will still support some 2D functions like surfaces and blitting and all that. While the techniques may change (in how you''ll have to interface with D3D to do stuff) the concepts will remain the same.
