I would say that neither Chess or Quake3 are childish, but Chess is a lot more intellectual... or is it Quake?

Chess is of course a very nice game, but a usual scenario for games is:
01: write code
02: compile
03: run
04: crash
05: try to terminate program
06: Developer Environment crashes too
07: blue screen
08: hardware reset
09: tired, VERY tired
10: play Diablo 2, Unreal Tournemant, ...
11: feel better
12: goto 01
Of course I often play games for other reasons, but quite often that''s the reason for me to play a game every now and then for 20 minutes or so.

Well Now,
Chess is certainly a challenge, espicially if it''s 3D with all the extras. But then again you can''t make Quake 3 overnight. It may help to have 6 million in cash and 67 expert coders helping you of course...

Chess is childish. Quake is not. How many 6-year-olds have you heard of that can kick ass at Quake? Now, how many of you have heard of Bobby Fischer, 6 year old kid that could beat almost anyone at chess?
Actually, you teacher sounds like he''s one of those morons that like to make big statements that basically sum up to comparing apples to oranges. Chess cannot be compared to Quake because Chess is not Quake. The programming of chess is very difficult while Quake is easy, testament to this fact is that there are tons of Quake clones and 1 good chess program (Big Blue, and that''s more of a hardware thing from what I understand). So from this, programming Quake is childish, programming Chess is not.

Big Blue is a chess AI, not chess game. There are tons of chess games, I personally like the ChessMaster series. There are tons of chess clones, just as there are tons of Quake clones. Chess is not more difficult than Quake, it''s just different in where the difficulty lies. For Quake, the difficulty is in the display, as you must manipulate a three dimensional environment. In Chess, the hardest part is the AI, which really just comes down to figuring out how far you can look ahead in moves without grinding the game to a halt, and how to set up the values on the captured pieces.

Chess is really the more popular game when you include the board varieties and computer ones. Are you sure you''re not misunderstanding your teacher''s statement? Maybe he was meaning in regards to a learning environment. You can learn more programming chess than an FPS I believe personally. Basically because of AI.
My opinion only.

Both chess and shooters are games. Games are arguably childish no matter what form they come in. So either way you lose.
Chess places more demands on the AI. The shooter places more demands on real-time I/O. Both of these are legitimate topics for a general programming project. Both are non-trivial from a practical standpoint.
Maybe if your shooter had AI controlled NPC''s your lecturer would find it acceptable?
