I used Paint Shop Pro. It''s similar to Photoshop.

Tools... paint brush, air brush, and layers with different blending modes. Yep, that about sums it up.

Actually, I think i have a better method to becoming a good artist..
I have found that I improve drastically when I sit down for a while and just watch someone better than me draw. It is kind of a rip off way to develop skill, but once you have some sort of artistic technique it is easy to alter to fit your own creativity. (im talking about regular art, not digital by the way)
As for digital art, I think www.3dcafe.com is the best place to learn to make good graphics.

Fantasy Edge, check out Tekkaman Blade. I think you might like it. More of a bodysuit/armour thing than robots but check it out.
Just look at one and you''ll see them all cuz basically most of their faces look alike.
