I think the start date should be December first; that way those competing in the gamedev contest can participate as well.
I like the Demo Hall of Fame idea :)

I wouldn't mind a December contest. I have about 4 weeks of vacation time saved up to do something like this.

I agree with a December start date. I'm taking some leave so I'll actually have time (and energy) to do some coding :)
I read the last Nehe post and survived!

Dredge-Master : While a browser contest is innovative, I'm not sure it would make a good "contest". First, skills will be more targeted on HTML decoding (or using libs that do this to make a picture) and secondly all entries will probably look the same. I wouldn't call a spinning cube a good entry, no matter what kind of texture is applied to the cube. Sorry to say that !

||v||atrix : The mass donation is a good idea but in practice it is very unlikely that saying so will be very efficient. I mean, let everyone feel responsible on how they use their money. Don't force them to use it for a particular purpose.
(sometimes I feel I'm talking like a grand bother. but who am I to dare doing so ? erm...)

to everyone : I know many of the entrants don't care about the prize. I was saying so when I entered too. However, we still NEED a prize IMHO. At least one. IIRC NeHe talked about that topic few contests ago when he was about to be short of prizes. But he clearly stated that we (entrants) needed some kind of reward, becauses besides the fair wording that a simple "hall of fame" is enough we still appreciate a real (physical) gift. jm2c, as usual.

lol; not trying to force anyone to do anything :p . What I had in mind was a kind of fund raiser type thing. If we can get about 5 people to contribute, then others might follow suit. Its just an idea; actually I thought the hall of fame idea was neat - we could implement one (just for fun).

One of my bigger concerns is that the site will simply just fade into nonexistence. Prizes, news, contests and new tutorials keep things going. That said we should try a few new things in this contest.
Intrinsic to making any game in the real world comes down to making a good functional specifications document. Developers are always weary of writing documentation, but you can tell the good developers apart by seeing the ones that can write a good spec.

So how about a theme centered around documentation?

Either
1) Have a functional spec writing contest on a game idea.

or

2) Nehe provides a generic functional spec on a game idea, and the contest is to make the best designed technical specifications document.
