16-bit color lighting... is it possible?!!!

I am working on an Isometric Engine, and would like to implement some level of lighting effects... how can I do really fast screen color manipulation? like in Baldur''s Gate, when it''s raining, and lightning flashes... how''d they do that so fast?! I''ve tried Alpha blending (way to slow), and I''ve also tried look up table Alpha blending (also fairly slow)... is there any other way to do this stuff?!?! Jerec ----------- CM SOFTWARE

WHat I did for lightening was just made the whole screen white for 1 frame.
It flashes so quick that it looks a good bit like lightening.
I know it''s very lame but it looks fairly convincing.

I suppose you could do something like what Nazrix said to do except alpha blend one frame half-way white, then show an entirely white frame, then blend the next frame half-way white.

Some people draw a lightning strike down the screen, then flash the screen white, then play thunder/bang... that works well..

These topics always wander off-topic, but I just have to wonder why games always play the sound of a thunderclap at the same time as they show the lightning bolt, even if it''s very far away? It doesn''t help immersion.
